Many people mount small light bars in there if they do not want to go with a full bar up top on the roof. Pretty interesting idea for a casual person to do. I would probably go that route if my truck had the scoop.

This is true, the guys who want to make any power do this so they can get a much thicker intercooler as well as more surface area.

There’s no way a snorkel should help jp and mpg. It may be pressurized but if u go wide open it becomes restricted. I really should just cut a hole in the hood and just have my filter pop out of the hood

I’m not looking for the scoop to be pressurized by the suction of the engine. But more have the air hit the filter much more force at low speeds like 35 mph and above

Kind of, the more bends or surface irregularities, i.e. corrugated tubing, the more turbulence you create (fluid dynamics). I'm no engineer or even auto mechanic, but I'll give you one simple example where everyone has noted an improvement- the heater tube under a VW bus. The factory piece is an aluminized, flexible corrugated tube. By replacing it with a smooth piece of galvanized ducting the defrost and front heat volume are noticeably increased, temperature is also higher meaning that the is moving faster (less time to cool down); adding insulation increases this even more. All of this has been measured but folks much smarter than me- not that that takes much. :anonymous: If the heater boxes are in good working shape, the old air cooled VWs are actually capable of producing enough heat to defrost the windshield and keep you warm. Most are in such bad shape at this point that the owner's have no idea what they're missing.

Incidentally, the intercoolers on Mitsubishi Pajeros, Toyota HiLuxes, etc. are located under the hood scoops.

I believe it will require more suction force to go through longer tubing even if the tubing is a snorkel. If the snorkel head was really really big then it could probably work better

MAy be oversimplified but since the ECU adjusts engine parameters to maximize mpg, wouldn't the computer adjust for the lower incoming air temp?

Cold air is dense and will require more fuel avoid running lean. So yes, the ECU will fatten the mixture to compensate for the cooler air.

And I understand it, the ECU is not maximizing MPG per se. It is attempting to maintain the stochiometric ratio between fuel and air.

I guess. More for emissions in my mind.

What function do you want it to serve when you say functional? Some have mounted a light bar in that spot. It is the perfect place for it.

Stoichiometrically speaking - the ECU is not trying to maximized mpg, it is optimizing mixing ratio, which results in maximum burn efficiency which subsequently results in max MPG - minutia notwithstanding.

If you are speaking stoichiometrically, shouldn't there be a hyphen for every 14 syllables? Lol

Edit: 15 syllables.... I should have rounded up.

14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel is the best ratio for air molecules to combine with fuel molecules and have very little "waste" left over.

Also, switching the fuel mixture above and below stoich helps feed oxygen into the converter. Converters store oxygen on purpose so it can be combined with CO and go out the tailpipe as CO2
