Goal difference, USA has a +3 and Colombia +2

 

In the world cup I believe it is head to head over goal difference, no??

 

Soccer is different in that aspect, even if the USA and Colombia had equal goal differential the next tie breaker is goals relinquished.

 

Each league and tournament has their own tie breaker rules. Most will follow FIFA's version for the most part though. In the case of Copa America it is basically

1) Goal Difference
2) Goals Scored
3) Head to Head result
4) Random Drawing

So for the USA being top of the group....it came down to Goal Differential. And the USA had a better one so they got top spot.


But to show tournaments are different...Here show Euro 2016 handles tie breakers.

1) Head to Head result (ie who won the game wins the tie breaker)
2) Goal Differential between the teams in question (in the games they played against each other)
Those two more apply when three teams are tied, the rest would be more when two teams are tied
3) Total Goal Differential
4) Goals Scored
5) Penalty shoot out

FIFA's version (ie World Cup)

1) Goal Difference
2) Total goals scored
3) Head to head results
4) Goal difference between teams in question
5) Great number of goals scored between teams
6) Drawing


If i remember correctly the World Cup and Euro use extra time for tied games followed by penalties in the knockout stages whereas in Copa America it goes straight to penalties except in the final. But dont quote me on this for sure

If that's not a prime example for introducing the video referee than I don't know what is. The correct decision would have been made, and it wouldn't have taken as long as it did to make the incorrect one. Epic fucking fail. This Copa America has been nothing but garbage. Sorry to say it for all those of you that have vested interest in it, but let's be honest here.

 

Honestly no need for video replay in that case. Simple goal line ref would have had no problem seeing that. Like they do in the Champions League.

But i do agree the reffing and shenangians by players have been piss poor.

 

Even that end line referee is useless, trust me. The team I support in Portugal got fucked last year in the Champions League and the year before as well, both situations where is up to that ref to make the call, and they blew it.

fifa would't be the scoundrels they are if they had video replay. professional soccer does not embrace change. and who gives a shit about that hand ball, brazil sucks and that penalty that was never called against brazil late in the first would have been the deciding factor in that match, of course that is if we all truly believe in transparency with every call made. Lets face it brazil is NOT anywhere near what they used to be.

 

Agreed. They have fallen off the deep end hard lately. Not looked at as a power anymore. More of a middle of the pack team sort of speak. Good!

 

I see it the other way kinda, as they still Are seen as a Power, yet clearly have issues meshing together. It got sad the last 5 minutes, they wholeheartedly did not look like they wanted it, they had given up already, but peru really played well real fire under their ass. Argentina has suffered for decades of this ton of club team talent but no meshing of the players and team as a whole. As a NY sports fan, seems to happen here a lot as well, the yankees lol my poor knicks lol

 

Spain loves the extra pass too much. Pass pass pass, inside the box, and no shot, so they play the ball back for a harder shot. LOL. Portugal is the same way... must be an Iberian thing.
