    hey guys

I used to have a 2019 Pro in the 6MT, I've sold that to my pops and am now looking at getting a 2020 Pro (gray) and am trying to decide on whether to get a manual again or not.

The manual with the OV tune was great to drive, though sometimes I wished the mpg was a little better. At 80+ it feels like there's a hole in your gas tank. I went wheeling several times in the pro and the manual definitely takes some getting used. The last thing I didn't love about the MT was trying to accelerate from a dead stop, it would fall on its face for the first 2 seconds or so then finally decide to drive. The tune definitely helped a ton with this, and I know the auto isnt perfect with this either.

Overall, the auto looks attractive for a daily driver with better mpg, plus offroad is a tiny bit easier to handul. I remain worried that the auto on the 3rd gen is going to drive me nuts and ill regret it, though I've driven my good friend's 2017 (no tune) a few times recently and didn't think it was atrocious.

Does the OV tune on the auto make a big difference like it does on the MT? Any words advice from you wise people?

As always thanks for reading and I appreciate all your guys thoughts and opinions.

This was my first ever automatic and I have no regrets. That being said, my other car (Mustang) is a manual. I just couldn't justify having both my vehicles in standard transmission. That's just too much. Some days, I just want to press a single pedal and go from A to B.

I had a manual 2G before my auto 3G, and would make the same decision again. The manual brought too many problems with it.

The latest OVT for the auto is very good, but I think we are in a new age of autos and they all seem to hunt a little.

The way most modern engines are designed a MT is at a disadvantage, the engines are designed to be used with an automatic. Old school engines developed peak torque at around 2000 rpm and often less. The 3rd gen. Tacomas need 4600 rpm. Even the Tundra needs 3600 rpm to get peak torque. That isn't a problem with an automatic.

No torque until you got engine speed up.

Auto isn't going to gain you any more mpgs. I'm not anti auto either, I like mine.
You want better mpgs, don't get the higher pro and slap larger ATs on it.

    Two things:

1)As for “falling on its face” problem, even though it’s a manual, there’s still an automatic system that delays the shifting response. I forgot what it’s called, maybe another member can post, but there’s a bypass/delete mod you can do so it doesn’t fall on its face

    2) every Tacoma going over 80+ mph is going to have bad gas mileage, auto or manual, no way to get around it. Drive slower

I still vote for the Manual. Everyone has different driving styles, with a manual i select my style and not the auto selecting it for me.

    Kinda.
You certainly don't need to be anywhere near 4600 to get decent torque from the 3.5.
In stock form, the engine calibration certainly limits access to available torque down low. Tuned however, you can do much better in the 1500-3000 range.
It's still not a rocket, but it's a better driving feel IMO.

It's a simple answer for figuring out which has more power with the auto vs Mt.

    A v8 full size.
Stop nit picking over a 2% performance difference. If you want power, buy a bigger truck. If you want economy, get a 4cyl.

I’d say that with the latest OVTune, these truck are very drivable and I find improvement in both town and highway. Go read the Dev thread from about 2-3 months ago, or the manual dev thread where the manual guys got a taste of the 2.0 final from OVTune. Most are exceedingly happy. If you like and want a manual, I’d say do it and know that OVTune and ADM are part of the package. Othe wise the automatic with OVTune is great too.

    What's a "manaul"?

Manual transmissions are a dying breed. I personally have no issues with the 6MT. If you can handle it, get one before they go the way of the dinosaur. The driving experience will always be more engaging (no pun intended).

At the risk of stating the obvious, if you want to accelerate hard from a dead stop you need to slip the clutch more to keep the revs up.
