5 years of prison? If they are in prison for more than 5 years they have become something, a criminal. Would you really want to teach a criminal weapons tactics? How about Close Quarter Combat Tactics, that way when they break into your house at night they wont waste any time doing/executing their crime on you. I still cant understand how some people see the military as a cure for the dregs of society. As a career military man I say we should take all the maladjusted young adults and send them to all the fast food restuarants that will whip them into shape, or how about hospitals or maybe the DMV. I dont know about your job but in mine a lot of times my safety and security has a direct connection to the sanity and sound judgement under pressure of the man or woman standing right next to me. Compulsory service is not the answer. Its a geographical cure and that just doesnt work.

They should make strippers serve in the Heavy Equipment shop where ever I'm stationed.

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
I have mixed feelings about it. I sort of agree that the last thing you want is people in the military who don't want to be there. But at the same time it sort of irritates me that the military seems to target specific demographics of the country with their ads, which to me seems a tad unrepresentative. It would be a lot more fair if everyone- from lawyers to farm boys were required to serve some time. Perhaps then it would give them a little more respect in regards to international affairs. Perhaps it would get people to really think more in regards to sending troops here and there. There would be a universal consequence with every decision.

I'd personally like to see required community service. I'm a firm believer in government from the local level. Build strong communities with people who care about their area and you build a country. So I'd be all about some sort of mandatory service in that regard.

For instance in Mexico, when you turn 18, you are obligated to report to the local army office, not everyone serves its a raffle, the ones that actually serve they go and do non military stuff, they get to go and teach people how to read, or reforestation, cleaning up parks and stuff, lucky for me I didnt had to serve LOL, it would have been cool if there was some weapons training

It seems the big argument in support of mandatory service is character reform. The military over the last few years has actually be restructuring the training environment to be less oriented towards "breaking" people into shape and more oriented towards job training and mentorship. Sure, there's one of the most efficient ways to guide someone into the military mindset is to completely strip them of their civilian comforts and gradually reintroduce them to military habits, morals, and mindset. It can be done effectively in a few weeks because everyone wants to be there. Those that change their minds have ways of getting out, it isn't easy because sometimes forcing someone through the process really is best for them and once they leave the training environment they clear their heads and thrive. Instructors can focus on knowledge and training instead of straight discipline and correction, ultimately producing better soldiers. The new soldiers arrive at their units ready for further training and service instead of needing more discipline and constant baby sitting.

If we reverted to mandatory service this process would take a huge step back. The "old" Army had other methods to take care of problem children. It's time consuming and counter productive. It takes more time to discipline one bad apple into properly sweeping and mopping a floor and then supervising the task than it does to train a prepared and motivated squad to run battle drills which they'll then be able to run autonomisly unsupervised.

I'm all for mandatory government service. At the completion of their education goals would be sufficient. If someone doesn't go to High School they can pick up trash on the side of the road or do public works projects. High School grads can work in a career oriented appretice program. College grads can serve time in their respective career fields. Masters and PhD level scholars can provide their expertise in whatever manner is appropriate. That way the country (not the govt) benefits from the individuals maximum potential. Individuals won't feel restricted by service making for more motivated and productive contributions. People trying to delay or fight off govt service or simply on the fence about where to go in life would be motivated to seek higher education ultimately benefitting themselves more than anything. Durations of service could be determined by the amount of govt support they received. Army medical officers who had their degrees paid for by the Army owe time and half. 4 years of college equals 6 years of service. If Federal scholarships paid for half of your engineering degree you owe half your time to engineering govt projects. It's not a punishment, it's a guaranteed job and plenty of opportunity to generate actual job experience and provide a valuable service where it's needed.

The military doesn't want to baby sit societies bad apples but a well implemented program would capitalize on each individuals best abilities.

i want to say everybody should serve. but if that happened, then our military would be full of misfits, like in nam.

People who go to prison usually have never had structure in there lives..Dont you think Mandatory military would make them a better person instead of wasting money on them in a prison. People who join the military have to go through training before they go into a combat situation....Just to give up on a person because he is in the "system" i think would be a failure. So why not send them to the military..we kill two birds with one stone.. no overcrowding in the system and more military to protect our country

I think everyone should join the military when they get out of high school. At least all men should. But if you don’t want to..... Oh well move somewhere else. If you don’t want to fight for your country go find another.... Call me an a$$hole you wouldn’t be lying, call me patriotic.... again I would have to agree. Just my 2 cents

I don't think everyone should join the military, because there are alot of losers out there that don't want to change, and we don't want them. BUT, i do think that anyone who wants to vote should have to serve. How many issues are tied to the military that no one knows about except those serving? Many, and there are many policies that people want that effect military members lives and their families lives. So i firmly believe that if an American wants to vote to do something that might seriously effect a military members life, that they should have at least served at one time. It would also make for more informed voters, it would make the right to vote that much more important to the voter, and would keep losers from voting because its the in thing right now.

No- You can't force someone to change their ways by training. They have to be willing participants. There are people who join up and little to no idea what they are doing and they fail at their jobs, don't make them selves into better people, and waste other peoples time cleaning up after them and doing the paperwork.

Many military training programs and jobs are challenging and lots of convicts don't want to be challenged- which is why they are in jail for trying to short cut the system. If there was a volunteer program- That's one thing. But trying to force anyone to do anything they don't want to is 1) a waste of time and 2) kind of opposite the point of what the military is trying to defend.

Every citizen should be expected to be prepared to bear arms in defense of our country. I support mandatory military service and during times of war, the draft. I don't object to the modern voluntary military at all, but too much is now outsourced.
