Excellent. your expertise will provide much use. Can you weld up aluminum? is that within your skill level?

I have never done aluminum nor am I set up for it. One of the reasons I am using rivets and riv-nuts. Would be ideal, but for the limited amount of aluminum work I do, I haven't made the jump to get set up for aluminum and learn (spool gun for my mig would be over a grand plus I would need another bottle...)

ya i hear its a real sonofabitch to get good welds. the whole frame of the top looks to be in really good condition so i dont think i will be doing any work there, but im investigating into an alternative to the swing open door

absolutely. The tailgate is nice to have as it acts a table and step. Seeing that now as I dont have it with the flatbed. Relying on step stools which isn't exactly safe.

Is it a barn door style? Ask the guys at the windmill cap store to see if its possible to swap, which I am sure it is since the shells should be all interchangeable for ease of manufacturing.

I think you might be able to see it in the photo itself, but its a barn door, swinging to the left.
The guy owning it is selling it on behalf of his father, asked me what i wanted to do with it. When i said camper his eyes lit up haha. Also those two holes on the right, there are two more on the left

he suggested taking the piano hinge thats being used for the door, relocating it to the top and the pistons i have from that old red cap, using those. also going to check out

    https://www.kijiji.ca/v-trailer-par...es/1203339449?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

so i can source some windows. No idea how to install them or what i will need but it will be a learning experience

Oh I see. Well in terms of making it a swing up, would just need some gas struts (princess auto) and then to do some chopping. May be hard to convert it to make it work with the tailgate, as it seems like there is an entire wall, that may need to be figured out.

In terms of the windows check out this build, I think he has some info about installing a window somewhere.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/1-bored-clerks-garage-built-camper.457359/page-33

I won't have any windows in mine, figured they are something to break when I actually go to use the truck as a truck, and also it allows people to see your shit. Additionally, I want this one to be a bit cooler in the summer to help the fridge in the summer. I will be trying to insulate it but as of right now its all aluminum.
this is what Ill be working with but with no windows and a roof rack like the one your getting

Thats a wicked set up you are going for. You have a point with the windows.. hmmm if it gets too hot i can always just open the sides up, saves me worrying about curtains and what not
I do have two gas struts front he red cap that used to be on my truck. I can Frankenstein that one (only paid 100 for it)

    Cap with plans.jpg

ill have to rehash these plans now. Saw an absolutely amazing beautiful/clean build. check it out

That’s a nice setup. With the drawers it helps. I found when I camped in the bed it was a lot of loading and unloading. Also with that setup the mattress has to go away to carry fuel or it has to be carried on the roof. I’m pretty bias to the rtt for my needs. But you have to decide what your doing, what you are going to carry and go from there. You figure this is my “third” setup. Each year I have changed it. I would have kept it they way it was if it wasn’t for the bed failure.

So youve absolutely got some good points. Overall, youre going to have a better camp set up, not feel so cramped. Are you putting the RTT on top of the flatbed?
The reason why i wanted to start with topper/camper build was mostly the cost. The RTT im looking at is 1600 dollary-doos, without shipping to here. The cap im getting is 450, plus ill probably end up dropping about 200-400 if i wanna go full retard on the extras. Then based on what happened to you i want to keep it onto a trailer like this build https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/box-rocket-trailer-build.192955/

So to start i can camp in the back of the topper for the next few years, while i accumulate wealth tools, etc and then when i move to a RTT/Overland/maybe even trailer, i can easily convert the back into hauling storage only which my little trailer houses the RTT and extra stuff

Oh absolutely. I’ll have the rtt on the roof. If it was just me I would be sleeping in the bed. But with the girlfriend it’s hard to make enough room plus she gets claustrophobic. So rtt was the only option to keep me sane as I hated taking shit out and repacking everyday. I got my arb rtt with annex for $2500 our the door with a 3 year additional warranty (which I will be trying to get some new shit as I have a rip in some places) at 4wp. I was able to pick it up after ordering within 3 days.

For a trailer it would be a lot easier to start with a small utility trailer and build it up. Look up 410 expedition on YouTube and their eh-2 build. Never know though. Would be fun to make one from scratch or start with a military trailer.

I won’t be running a trailer as i have enough of a hard time turning around on tight trails, I’m shit with a trailer and I have been in spots where backing up was the only option. With a trailer it would be a little more complicated.

Not as much as I wanted to get done today. But will be getting warmer during the weekend.

Waited to install this Drivers Side ARB Bumperette since about January. Had to cut off some existing nuts and bolts, drill about 3 new holes to secure. Shes not going anywhere

Any suggestions for fog lights on the bottom? I was thinking cutting something out for some amber flood/spot but id have to fabricate a bracket

    much like mesojdm's build
