Get a case of brake cleaner and rags. Soak the rag in brake cleaner and stuff inside those ports and let it sit for an hour. It will help with cleaning process.

Agree. I would replace it if possible. I did spend hours to washing Prius one.
May get for a good price this week.

Sucks. Dealer in Seattle has it for 540.
The only issue I see with cleaning it is ACIS.

Actually It's much faster and less mess if walnut blasting. Have to be 100% sure that every cylinder walnut blasted is at TDC. Not difficult. The difficult part is to manufacture the attachment that vacuums the walnut media while blasting the walnut shells.
I have a BMW with N54 engine. Sucker has direct injection, so you need to clean that engine every 40-50K miles or so.

I’d look around a bit more, there is a 25% off oem Toyota parts sale until the 27th.

Sorry you are having to deal with this OP, but I must admit I find this thread very interesting.

I hope it all works out for you in the end.

Dirtbikes switched from paper to oiled foam 60yrs ago, it's been that way ever since.

You can forsure clean that manifold. It's not rocket science just elbow grease, time and some cleaning products. Worrying about missing a particle or 5 at this point is the least of your worries. Pretty sure it'll be 99.8% better then it was before you opened it up.

BTW, all that dirt didn't pass through the K&N, if it did you'd see compromised filter material because even the worst K&N won't pass that amount of debris. Something in the intake tract came loose or wasn't assembled correctly or was damaged and it sucked dirt. Simple as that.

just because i like argueing i been running k&ns for over 10 years on multiple vehicles (not on my 3rd gen) still with squeaky clean intakes so il continue to use regardless. and no i aint gona do an oil analysis

I wouldn't buy a new intake manifold for this engine until I know the condition of the block. Compression test, leak-down test and scope each cylinder.

No egr on these engines. Egr valves (on gasoline engines) mostly went away once the VVT systems became more advanced..

Op, are there any signs that there was dirt/crap/water lying in the bottom of your airbox or in the bottom of the intake tube? (between the airbox and throttle body)
To me, it kinda looks like some leftover dirt from someone swamping it in muddy water at some point. Either that or a major intake leak (post air filter).....

If it was my truck, I’d do a compression test and have a look with a borescope before doing anything else. If all the cylinders are good, then I’d do what others have suggested and rotate the crank and clean the intake ports, one by one, as best you can. Use compressed air and a shop vac if possible....

    Good luck.

The dirt outside looks exactly like and oily version of the build up inside. Pretty clear the K&N was the problem.

    back to bone stock.

i had a class. i want to say it was mechanics of materials. we had a machine we would measure airflow. we tested the restriction of various shapes. elbows, ubends, etc. the professor asked if there was anything we wanted to test. i asked if we could set it up to measure our car airfilters. he agreed. i ran to get my OEM chevy filter element. my buddy gilbert pulled his K/N from his chevy. the OEM was profoundly more free flowing. my professor felt it would really be crucial to get the oil right. too much equaled restriction.

it was cool, and just a simple test with really too many variables. like how dirty our filters was. but it was cool.

Agreed, definitely this first. No sense in dumping money into a trashed block

Take the parts off and use detergent (like Tide) and water, and scrub it out, then rinse. Thats what ive used for all my dirtbike filters for the last 40 years and it works a charm. The dirt is identical to what you have on your intake tubes.

It will wash out easily and leave a nice clean surface. Warm water sometimes works a bit better. You dont need harsh chemicals for this.

Forums!? ("Id replace it all", "Id never use anything other than factory", "Id ask my mommy". Too much overly cautious and low value advice. Its painful to read.

Does this one fall into the "what do I have to lose?" bucket? If yes I agree; give that fucking thing a good bath and see what happens!

Thank God we have these guys fixing stuff in our apocalyptic future! They don't care if it ain't oem!

Over time it can... If I had to guess, this dude probably goes off road much more than the average person here and has been running the filter for a few years or more.
And yes, it's as simple as holding a K&N up to a light to be able to see it's "compromised filter material" (holes between the gauze fibers that allow fine dust through).

What did somebody else say earlier... ? You can read a newspaper or magazine through it? (lol)
