alright, I'm new to the taco world, and am searching for some guidance.. I have a 2020 manual, also ordered an AJT fob.. i want the fob to work the doorlocks so i can leave a blank in the ignition.. apparently i have an "h key" (???) .. none of this makes any sense to me because until this point, the newest vehicle ive owned was an 05 dodge diesel , followed by 2 other later model vehicles.. but i saved up for 2 years working in the oilfield to put down a fat downpayment for this tacoma that i ordered in dec of 2019 and just got a month ago.. feels good to have a truck assembled in texas though.. all i want is to be able to carry my clicker in my pocket with my ignition key in my truck. i dont understand what a transponder is or what an h key does.. i just dont want to walk around and get my thighs poked by a metal shiv.

The transponder, or whatever it technically is, needs to be within a certain radius of your ignition (pretty sure it’s less than 1”) for your vehicle to recognize the key and allow ignition. It’s a security feature that the vast majority of vehicles have.

The H key is just Toyota’s name for the key you have. I believe toyota has 3 different keys for the Tacoma. The base non H key for the SR (no fob attached, not sure if it has the transponder chip or not), the H key with remote locking/unlocking and possibly auto start on automatics, and the FOB for the push button start vehicle with the proximity unlock.

Other than the flip fob, you could possibly look into remote start systems that have a separate FOB. Additionally you could get the N2 designs remote start system with the cell phone module to allow you a number of feature through an app on your phone (starting, locking, unlocking, GPS tracking etc). Your truck needs to have a cell phone signal, so it won’t work in remote areas with no service.

Im sure the obvious security risk of leaving a key in your vehicle doesn’t need to be explained to you lol.

so what would happen if i left a key blank in the ignition, taped the transponder under the steering column and carried the fob?

Can’t really answer that. I’m not sure if everything would “play nice” together if your vehicle sensed the key in the ignition constantly.

Use your second key and trying to lock your vehicle with the other key in the ignition and see how it goes.

According to MESO flip fobs should be available “soon”

If you have a keyed ignition , I don’t think it matters where the FOB is. The manual transmission does not have push start buttons, at least it was this way on the 17s

The H key FOB, which is all one piece with the key absolutely needs to be in a certain place. Ie the ignition.

If you have a stand alone FOB (aftermarket) for remote start in addition to the H key, then sure, it doesn’t matter where that aftermarket fob is.

I’m not sure, but I think you can get a key made that doesn’t have the clicker on it, so it’s a bit smaller, not sure if this helps. Maybe a dealer will just sell the fob? Prolly would be pricey.

I had a plain non-transponder key made at a hardware store to lock my keys in the car when biking. The key will not start the truck (I think it just cranks the starter) but if I hold the transponder key close to the ignition, I can use the plain key.

But does just the key need to be in? Or Does the other parts need to be present?

Buy one of these and get it programmed at the dealer for $60. Go to the dealer, it's way easier because a locksmith may not be able to programm and they'll still charge you whether it does or not.

Buy one of these for $5-$10 and get it cut to your original.

Then cut the key end off the one in the first link and just use the head to carry, lock and unlock.

sad news, bois.. with the entire fob in 3 seperate pieces, i have this to report. for the 2020 manual tacoma; the lock/unlock function works as it should. the key did not start the truck while transponder was was anywhere around the steering column or even as close to the ignition as i could get it. gonna have to wait til tomorrow to see what the stealership says and will probably have to get a key cut so i can leave it in the ignition..

If you leave me a transponder in your vehicle, I can hot wire your ignition in less than 2 minutes including trim pop. The REASON hot wiring is a thing of the past is BECAUSE of the TRANSPONDER and bypass...you just made it really easy, however, I would have to know you did this and so still slim chance, not suggested. So if I am understanding you correctly, you just don't want the metal neck (key) part because of bulkiness or awkward shape? I guess I'm not understanding the goal here...

I like the idea, but at that point might as well be push button start, every thing stays in the pocket
