I recently bought a 2010 Tacoma SR5, 2.7 liter manual engine, 14k miles. Although I've only ever owned manual vehicles and am experienced driving them, it seems as though it shifts rather hard. So here's my question; Is this just me getting used to a new clutch, or is there anything I can do to make it a little smoother?

    Build thread coming soon!
I can't speak for the 4 cyl crowd, but my 6 speed is also hard to shift. Spirited driving leads to grinding when forced into the next gate.
I point the finger at 3 things:
Not enough mileage on it yet to have loosened up (my truck only has 9000 miles on it)
Clutch disc is very heavy so it takes a moment to match speed
Laggy throttle response makes it an exercise in "practice makes permenant" to achieve smooth shifts
So, to answer your question... I think we just need to get used to it!

Definitely not the smoothest shifting stick I've driven. It's pretty well known that it takes a special sort of "finesse" to shift a Taco...

At the very least 1-3 is noticeably rough.

Since new 1-2 are "rough" for me even with swap to redline synthetic. 3-5 are smooth. 32,000 on the clock now. It is normal per the design of this type of transmission. There are no linkages and bushings like in other designs to cushion the shift. You will feel every gear change a lot more.

    define hard shifting and rought...

i'd say mine shifts pretty smooth without much effort. clutch takes more effort to press than most other manuals that i have driven and the throttle by wire lag takes a little getting used to.

When I refer to rough shifting I would compare it to if you just let go of your clutch how you feel the gear change and your vehicle will surge forward. It feels like that even though I am releasing the clutch slowly and giving an ample amount of gas so that it should be an easier transition in my opinion. By the way I appreciate all the replies.

You are referring to the clutch grabbing hard and causing the small surge. Mine does this right at the top of the pedal position no matter what I do for starting off in 1st gear. It did it on the 3 trucks I tried before buying mine. Starting to seem normal given my experience with them. I have the new tsb clutch too and it is the same as the original.

The gears aren't changing when you let out the clutch technically. You already changed gears, so just to clarify this isn't hard shifting.
