Been working on fitting all the relays and terminal/junction blocks inside a project enclosure to make everything a little neater.

I couldn't stand the random relays and junction blocks just hanging there, this makes it look a lot better haha.

Hopefully tomorrow afternoon. I just had to finish stuffing all that crap inside the project enclosure and wiring the horn relay. I have to stop by my local pick-n-pull in the morning to pick up some parts. Now's a good time to tease my next projects!

I'm picking up some ambient temperature sensors and pigtails for my Gentex mirror that I got out of a Nissan Titan (with Homelink, Temperature, and Compass).

It looks like they just got in some 80's Cadillac sedans that came with 4 note horns (A, C, D, & F tones instead of the standard High/Low tones on most cars). I'm going to replace the terrible Japanese moped/scooter horn that Toyota decided to install in '95-'00 Tacomas. I looked at a lot of different horn tones from F150's, Suburbans, Benzes, Audis, Tahoes, etc. and nothing beats the sound of 4 note horns that Cadillac had on their old luxury sedans.

    Bart,

    I bought everything to convert mine, except I need the power connectors like you did;

    • Driver's Side Kick Panel Connector (Upper, IH3)
    • Driver's Side Kick Panel Connector (Lower, IH2)
    • Passenger's Side Kick Panel Connector (Upper, IL2)
    • Passenger's Side Kick Panel Connector (Lower, IL1
Do you have a pic of just those 4 connectors so I can ensure that I'm looking for the correct ones?

Also, which mirrors did you end up buying? Power/heated 4Runner mirrors are what I'm wanting to install on my 98 Tacoma SR5.

Lastly, how much would you charge me to make the wiring harnesses for the windows, locks, and mirrors, like what you've done in this thread?

BartMaster, I'm finally getting a chance to read through your thread and see your work. Excellent execution and documentation. I suppose I got the same effect when I did this work on my pre-Taco years ago, but you've actually taken time to document your work in order to help others, which I clearly did not do. Fantastic stuff here!

Thanks so much! You were actually a huge inspiration for this project, you were one of the only people I could find that has done this before in some capacity. Gave me a lot of hope!

I'm finally putting all this into the truck tonight. I have the driver's side door off to install everything inside. I've removed all the manual components and I'm working on swapping the key cylinders.

It's currently 10 PM but damn I'm about to pull and all nighter for this.

    Update 12:09 AM:

Lock actuator is installed. Swapping the key cylinders was pretty straightforward, you just need to turn the cylinder counter clockwise. I installed the window regulator and discovered the motor didn't work, turns out it was burnt out. I stole a new one from my spare parts and I went on.

Right now I'm working on merging the existing '98 speaker wiring with the '04 wiring (so I can have the speaker system be independent of the door system)

    IMG_1337.jpg

(The smallest connector is the original '98 wiring harness, and the two larger ones are responsible for the '04 components)

I chose not to use the '04 speaker and tweeter wiring since I want the power door retrofit to be independent of the original '98 wiring.

Kinda extreme pulling the door off. Makes it a lot easier to work on. But putting it back on can be a pita sometimes.

To be honest with you I have no idea why I pulled the door off... I was just in the moment. Took about three hours to remove and install everything in just the driver's side door. Good thing it was in the comfort of my nice heated living room and not my freezing garage. Haha.

    UPDATE 2:01 AM PST:

Just finished the driver's side door. I'll do the passenger door and wiring tomorrow, I'm exhausted.

I ran into some issues when doing the driver's side Swap. First of all the Lock Actuator assembly is an absolute PITA to remove, and re-Install. You need lots of patience for removing the handle, arms, and reinstalling them properly. When reinstalling and removing the glass removing the bolts for the window track helps a lot.

After installing the '04 window regulator I discovered the motor didn't work. I stole one from my '98 parts doors and it all turned out okay. It worked fine yesterday I don't know what happened. Windows work great now but it's really really slow going up, at least compared to my Mercedes E320 windows.

Lastly I didn't bother changing the round speaker for the elongated one the '01-'04 model years used, I had to trim a considerable amount of speaker shroud on the door panel for it to fit with a Dremel. It fit just fine afterwards.

I have to go pick up some replacement plastic sheeting to act as the moisture shield since the old one was basically disintegrating when I removed it. Otherwise the driver's door is complete. Now on to the other door and hooking it all up.

Well I woke up about an hour ago around noon...

I dropped by Home Depot to pick up some 4 mil plastic sheeting to replace the original moisture barrier. Also got some RTV Automotive Silicone to seal everything in.

Once I install the new moisture barrier I'm going to put the driver's side door in and do the passenger side and the wiring. I'll keep you guys updated!
