Off-roading is personal preference. I asked the same thing a few months ago on TTORA, got pros and cons of each.

I've got a manual and while its a bitch in stop and go its still alot of fun. Only downside is if you offroad in alot of sand and don't know what your doing you can spin your tires easier and dig yourself a nice little hole to play in.

I think this would only work for some applications. It would be a complex masterful design to be able to split the lower and upper gears when hauling 125,000# up a grade. I only speak from experience of course.

Get a AUTO. These 6 speeds a POS's I'm on my 2nd tranny. A bunch of X Runner guys have had problems with them. Could be with how we drive them but some guys that baby their trucks still have problems. I wish I had an auto. My last two toyotas had autos with no problems.

What is an X runner? How do you drive them?

And this is the reason why I traded my 6spd for an auto.

Browsing the X-Runner forums it seems like the X-Runners have more tranny problems than the Tacoma, but once you take in to account that the X-Runner is only sold in the 6spd it makes sense. I've seen similar stories on the Tacoma forums, just not as many.

I got rid of my 6spd because it had a lot of quirks (I'd call them defects, but Toyota said they were "normal"...) that I couldn't stand and I know they weren't helping in prolonging the life of the tranny. I didn't really enjoy driving the truck because of them. Traded up to an auto and love it! The 09 and I hear some 2010's have the transmission lag that's annoying, but I'd take this over the 6spd that I had.

So, anyone tried a different manual tranny? I would mind it going out if i had a coupld months to save up for a better one! Well, let me rephrase, i would be pissed but i think i could get over it by upgrading!

When I bought my 06 Dbl Cab I went in committed to shifting....I left in an Auto.

When I picked up my 09' I went in committed to shifting...Errr once again I left in an auto.

Why? Well go drive em back to back and see what you think as its your coin but IMO the Manual they put in the tacoma is a clunky turd box. It has long throws and isnt a smooth fun to shift piece. Its clunky and weird and I didnt like the clutch pedal travel..... The AT on the other hand is almost seamless. Its so smooth and I felt I could actually accelerate faster with the AT.

Its yer' Moolah. Go drive em' both and make your call Bro!!

Just dont stumble into the GM dealer and accidently leave with a Colorado...Now that would really suck ass!

These trucks are way way too technically advanced to make swapping trannies a realistic thought.

My wife can't drive a manual so six speed for me! Only sucks in traffic. I can tell the truck what gear I want it in and I love that. Sometimes I miss being lazy with the auto but not very often.

I was convinced on a 6-speed before I went and test drove them.

All my other cars were sticks and that's what I liked.

I just didn't like the way the stick felt on the tacoma. Throws were long, clutch was long, gearing felt redundant, the RPM boost when pushing in the clutch was annoying and I didn't like the bizarre looking 3 cupholder thing.

Also read alot about clutch and tranny problems on em.

Loving the auto, wouldn't have said it before but I think it's def better for offroading, especially if you live in the hills. You can always shift the auto yourself if you want.

Does cost a little more, but the resell value is higher aswell.

I have always been a fan of manuals in everything that I've had. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but I just feel more in control as someone else had stated.

I cant see what they would swap out a 6 speed for???

Maybe a short throw shift kit would address the clunky long throw but what about the clutch? It has way too much travel and oddly enough dosent have "That Good Feel" for me.

Stop worrying about procjects that would leave you truckless for weeks on end and leave you with some hodgepodge up shadetree bullshit.

Go drive em both and pick one...You need your extra moolah for shit other than swapping trannies in a brand new 30K truck bro:cool:
