Just to stir the pot. How about an 80 year old woman, who can barely see over the steering wheel, but she has driven automatics for 60+ years?

    ...Not a good driver...hahaha

Hmmm.....Ive driven vehicles with more gears than some people have IQ points. I think every tranny has its place, but I think its UN FUCKING BELIVABLE that people have the audacity to say that someone else is a bad driver or whatever based on the tranny they choose to have in THEIR DAILY DRIVEN VEHICLE. Some of you are fucking morons! WHO gives a shit what tranny someone has in their their truck?

its like stairs vs escalators, they serve the same purpose and the end result is the same.

I personally prefer the manual 6 over my previous manual 5 truck.

I think it all just depends on what you prefer.

Gone over the Top for a 5-lug..
When i went into the Toyota dealer 2 weeks ago - i had 3 main objectives, and only 3 objectives. 1. Tacoma 2. Manual 5 speed 3. Air conditioning.

I've only had it for 1 1/2 weeks and 400 km's now - but there is absolutely nothing wrong with this 5 speed manual design. The shift throw may be on the long side as compared to a car, and the same with the clutch pedal. To be expected, it's a truck transmission design.

I don't really understand the issues expressed so far with first gear. If stationary, the transmission slips into first gear totally fine - and that is when you should be doing so. Second gear is good for 5 mph and onwards, and either the 2.7L or the 4.0L have more than enough torque on tap to pull from there. I have noted that it is hard/resistant to slipping into first if you are moving - some transmissions do behave in that manner.

My '88 F150 had a muncie 3 speed with granny gear in it - now THAT is a transmission that you paddled like a row-boat, and learned the meaning of being deliberate in shifting.

It sounds like a lot of you are trying to impart Honda Civic or rally car properties to a transmission that has no relation to those sort of designs.

    As for automatic transmissions ..

I have an auto and I didn't have a choice between AT or MT on my 11 DC 2.7 but I must say as my daily driver, AT kicks butt! Just gas and brake ;-)

Like my 5 speed manual just fine. I wouldn't have minded an auto, but didn't want to pay that much extra for it. Plus if anything ever goes wrong with the transmission, a manual is easier and cheaper to fix. Don't care what anyone else drives, as long as they are DRIVING and not bobble-heading.
