    I found my truck in great shape, with only 27k miles on it 3 years ago...beggars can't be choosers. I was buying it regardless of what transmission it had!

    For 1st gens: Ask one of them.

    For 2nd Gens, I'd rate the auto as superior. Easy hill starts, no clutch to stall out, select every gear, easy two footing.

    Manual.

    The engine braking that you get while going down steep inclines and such is totally worth it, the feeling is like a totally extra set of brakes being applied. Makes for more control in a lot instenses, especially while wheeling. In a lot cases you can simply have it in 1st while going down a steep incline and not even need to use the brakes as the engine braking will slowly take you down, where as if you had an auto you would probably be riding the brakes all the way down the hill. And as mentioned already, when you've got it in first gear, 4 low, you can pretty much go so slow that you bairly move, makes great for climbing.

    I would prefer auto, and I have a manual (2nd gen, sorry I am in the 1st gen area). Having to rev up to not roll backward on an incline, and stalling can really be a PITA.

    I've had both and wheeled both quite a bit. My first Tacoma (r.i.p.) was a manual. It was amazing.

    Autos have 2 downsides.

    One, mentioned a lot in this thread, is having to ride the brakes on long downhill sections. What is that smell? Oh, not to worry. It's only my brakes. :eek: Nothing beats engine braking in this situation.

    The second major issues is tranny temps. Particularly, fluid temps. Though it has always handled all that I've thrown at it, it is not unusual for the tranny fluid temps to exceed 230*F. This will in turn effect the water temps.

    If you wheel an auto hard and often, a separate tranny cooler becomes an important upgrade option.
