    The Off Road TRDs have the downhill setting... no need to touch the brakes as well as no chance of going into a skid from braking on loose stuff using the down hill assist,

    How does that help? If I hit that, in gear wouldn't the starter just try and push the truck up and not actually start the engine?

    Automatic is my preference, I haven't like the manuals since companies started using the hydraulic clutch, less feel to the peddle.

    You're going up a *really* steep hill and stall it in gear.

    Instead of putting in the clutch and autolaunching, you push clutch-start-cancel and start the car *in gear* proceeding up the hill without ever disengaging the drivetrain.

    Never wheeled with an Auto.....

    But to be totally honest? If I ever wheeled a tacoma again, I'd wheel an Auto.

    After wheeling with a 96 tacoma manual and a Jeep Wrangler manual.....the tacoma manual stinks. No torque.....

    And not to stir up the Jeep-vs-Toyota pot, but that's just my experiences. The older jeep manual trannies were fricken awesome. You could be on a hillclimb, let the clutch out (no gas) and it'd start pulling upwards (no rolling backwards like the tacoma clutch did).

    Shit i removed that dumb button it's now a switch for my off road lights.

    Not sure when that feature was added to Tacoma's but my truck doesn't have anything like that. Beside, the OP was asking about wheeling 1st Gens.

    Lucas it all comes down to what you want to drive they both have there advantages and disadvantages. The 2nd Gen guys for the most part are going to say auto because of all the fancy down hill assist they have. Most 1st Gen guys will say Manual just because the manual on a 1st Gen is awesome off road. If your comfortable driving a manual for a DD in traffic and such I recommend you buy a manual. There is less maintenance on a manual gear box just some gear oil every few years and if you burn out a clutch and you probably wont unless you can't drive a manual it's not that much to replace.

    All & All the choice is yours buy what you want to drive.

    Exactly.

    Remember, you don't have a foot on the BRAKE while you're doing it. Engine compression and gearing holds the truck in position. Then it starts moving forward simply as the starter turns while it's in gear. You don't want to have too much (if any) gas on, or the truck will lurch forward when it starts, breaking traction.

    All that said, when I learned about the technique, I had a truck with an automatic. So I've never practiced it. Next time I go wheelin' though, I'm gonna do a couple practice hill starts that way.

    I don't think the 1st & 2nd Gens are the same on this. I couldn't start my truck in gear with the clutch start cancel. Right when you try and turn is over the truck just jumps forward. The truck still has to be out of gear to start.

    I'm sorry but that can't be good on the starter trying to move the whole truck up hill for that matter with the starter. Honestly on a steep incline the E brake is you best friend.
