Pretty much all that you can really do is simply drive it, go through all the gears and see how it feels and sounds. I have driven one or two first gen manuals before that when shifted between 1st and 2nd gear when cold would produce a pretty hard shift. Not sure exactly why, but once warmed up and you drove a few miles it was smoother.

The only time I dread have a MT is if by chance I get stuck in the dreaded I-70 traffic on the way back from snowboarding. Non-stop 0-5-0mph stop and go on a steep mountain pass where you engage and disengage the clutch at least 40,000 times every 2 minutes.

Talk about calf and quad cramping :(

auto. ...simply because the torque converter provides an infinitely low gear ratio. with a stick, the ratio is fixed.

anything an auto can do I can do better lol I won't drive an auto cause I hate not having full control of my throttle and manuals are fun and it takes more skills than just letting off the brake

Yep it does :) I could do this with my old 4cyl '97 with 33" tires and stock gears. Works like a charm, you have to be in 4lo though, if you try in without it you'll just stall out.

Im going to stick up for the Automatic drivers in this thread (mostly because I am one [IMG]).

Anyone that offroads in Drive or with OD on is an idiot. Turn off overdrive, put the shifter in 1st or 2nd gear and you should have plenty of engine breaking available. Manual trany's will have more; whatever.

Auto's have less gear selection/control? I would say they have MORE. Its very easy to shift gears with an auto and no clutch required. See above.

Performance and ease of use IMO goes to the Auto tranny. As stated before by Space Wrangler, "torque converter provides an infinitely low gear ratio." 1st gear and 4lo is great in a manual (I can attest to that), but 1st gear and 4lo in an Auto is unstoppable.

However and unfortunately, Autos are less reliable, can overheat, and are more expensive to repair/replace. Changing a clutch in the manual is an afternoon job. Rebuilding an automatic is a $4000 trip to a repair shop.

I will end with this note: Ive driven both and prefer the Manual for shear fun factor. Unfortunately, this is the first automatic vehicle ive owned only because the Extra Cab never came with the manual :(.

I'm going to disagree with this...mainly the control part. Drives have more control with a manual due to the fact that the driver is the one that's switching the gear, whereas autos switch based on engine rpm.

true to an extent. ...but it doesn't really matter when you're in 1st gear. ..i can select 1st gear in my auto with the selector and it will stay there. ..and that's the gear you're going to be in when it gets nasty. ...and, because i have a torque converter, i have an infinitely low 1st gear. ...cant do that with a manual.

Which is why you dont put it in drive :).

The Extra cab Tacoma (4door) didnt have the optional manual transition. Sucks.

I've had both. Just bought a 2000 auto. Took it out last weekend and loved the performance on slick rock downhills and very muddy conditions. I was reluctant to buy an automatic because all the stories I've heard about manuals being superior offroad. So far so good. As far as manual, I owned a 99 for ten years. I know want they are capable of. It's hard to beat coming down a mountain on an old washed out logging road covered in ice in 1st. No gas, no brake, just pray. Hope I can trust the auto like I did the manual
