Exact opposite here. My friends with the 6speeds can't get over 18MPG. I can get 21MPG easily.

Right and that's what confuses most people like our friend SLOTaco. The rated numbers don't lie and the many MPG threads here on the site prove that. It's easy to say "X friend gets worse than me and he has an auto" but that's not very scientific because it doesn't take into account driving style. For comparison, I personally get 18 city/23 hwy.

Very true. You may drive more conservatively than others and that's a good thing. Sure, we all like to put the foot down sometimes but driving style has the biggest impact on MPG than anything else, IMO.

They're geared differently. The manual will typically rev about 500 rpms higher than the auto at highway speeds.

    I prefer manual.

Just glad they still offer a stick, a Tacoma is the only well equiped Crew cab 4x4 offered in the US w/ a manual transmission.

4 yrs with the 6spd. Fun to drive, in control, no issues. MPG much better than sticker, at least out in the country.

i like automatic simply for the fact i dont have to worry about stop and go traffic. if i had a car, that would be a different story. i would love to have a car that was a stick. make me feel like i was driving a sports car :D

That's something that I've heard alot of people say, but it honestly doesn't bother me. I've been driving standard since I purchased my first car at 17, so shifting is second nature now. Don't even notice it most of the time. Plus automatic transmissions never seem to shift when I think they should.

If I was driving a bigger truck, I might think differently. I like the auto in my Dads Silverado, and don't think I would want to drive it with a manual.

I'll get an auto when I'm old and own some luxury sedan. I've always driven a stick backroads, country, highway and city (Pittsburgh too!) and it's really not that bad. My left calf is more defined than my right. Auto just doesn't feel right. It's like the electric knife of the automotive world.

Well us in SoCal with a stick must be masochists, I personally dont have a problem with traffic and a standard. Though I drive in a way where I limit my shifts and how much i'm on the brakes i.e. distance between me and the next car.

wow, im really 50/50 on this one.
Im really picky so i like to shift my gears when i want, not when the truck does. i also like the sporty feel of being able to hold a gear in a manual. But, offroad a auto is way easier to drive and finesse over obstacles and will allow you to get away with running a little bit taller gearing.
Autos are smoother and easier to drive in traffic to....though those things dont bother me.

I have learned everything from a manual transmission. I learned how to drive with my brothers old ford truck that had a manual. My parents and one of my brothers drive manuals, I've notice a slight jerk when shifting gears, not really a smooth ride. I have not been in a Automatic Tacoma to feel how it rides.

You can't beat the Tacoma 5 Speed Auto but I do wish that I had a 4x4. In the case that I did have a 4x4 I would probably want manual for control purposes.

nothing yet, first thing is new tires.
6spd all the way, I know I'm going to miss the convenience of the auto, but the fun factor outweighs it.

Sorry to disagree but the auto gets better gas mileage, has better resale, shifts smoothly every time, no different at towing except the smoother shifting, and the auto even has an extra cooler with the tow package that the manual doesn't. If it's slow speed your talking about, control off road, shift to 1st or 2nd on the selector, works the same as a manual. Starting on a steep grade I'll take auto everytime. ;)
