I voted automatic simply because I drive my truck for work everyday and it is just easier. The 96 Tacoma I had prior to this one was a 5 speed and I put 327,000 miles on it so I have some catching up to do with the automatic.

This doesn't make any sense. If someone has their "foot on the brake pedal all the time" that's just bad driving habits, PERIOD.

This Taco is my first auto, I've always had manuals before. I don't mind driving either: a manual becomes a part of you and you don't even have to think about it after a while, but an auto is just so damn relaxing in stop-go traffic. I don't find any advantage in either off road really, mainly just preference. I like the auto more when towing and plus after seeing the new auto trans is more efficient than I could be shifting I decided to go auto. No regrets here.

Love the manual in my taco. Although I must say, if I could do it all over again, I would be pulling an auto off the lot. Living in a major metropolitan area, its gets real old shifting through the gears and having to creep around in stop and go traffic. I feel bad that poor clutch and the torture it must endure...

I learned with a manual, but for being in a big city auto is my choice.

    Hey Ya'll,

I needed the Double Cab which only comes with Auto/V6.

I have always loved manual transmission vehicles because they are more fun to drive. Manual usually gets better fuel economy, but the auto in the Taco is geared in such a way that the Auto gets better fuel economy, so I appreciate my auto for gas saving reasons. I used to drive a stick in LA traffic as a messenger, and never was bothered by the manual. I can't stand it when an auto shifts to a higher gear too soon, and has to down shift when I step on the gas.

    Later,

    Allan Greenblazer

Definately Manual Tranny. Reason: My dad doesn't want to borrow my truck. ( I live at home, cause I'm still a kid... kinda.) And my mom can't drive it.

Also cause I have a feeling it impresses the ladies... :)

    Automatic.

I've own both in many vehicles in my 30+ years of driving, so I have no problem driving a manual. I've towed a trailer trailer in the Arizona mountains with both.

I like manuals in my trucks but didn't like the one in the Tacoma. First gear is way too low for everyday driving. I didn't like how the engine would rev between shifting; that's just not right. The automatic gets better mileage with less work. I have notice the stoplight lurch and I think the truck idles higher than necessary.

In my F250 I would start out in 2nd. Driving the F250 in Phoenix rush hour on surface streets broke me of the manual. The factory clutch was much stiffer than the replacement; clutch/pressure plate/throw-out bearing replaced at 80,000+ miles.

The mileage issue is a moot point. The posted MPG is an average of many drivers, it depends on how you drive it.

Manual... had trucks with both manual and autos. prefer a manual. Don't do much city driving although traffic can get heavy at times and I wish I had an auto at times, but wouldn't trade my 5 speed for an auto. Local driving I get 17 to 19 mpg (depending on how much I get into it) and 22 to 24 on the hwy(24 if I keep it below 80).
