manual or automatic, which do you prefer and why?

i prefer a manual absolutely but, the one in my truck has got to be one of the worst i have ever had the displeasure to row.

funny thing is i drove a first gen tacoma for like 3 weeks and it was perfect. i firmly believe the first gen was a easier to live with truck.

 

Autos are good for city driving....
BUT
its a truck and I have a 4X4 and a manual is great in the snow.. It was one of the reasons I bought it. 2008, 4x4 with a 4 cyl and a 5 speed with 4100 miles

 

Have the 6speed stick. And I love it fun to drive

 

I prefer manuals, but not for my daily driver. The taco is an auto...the duster has the 4 speed

 

First Gen 6 cyl.....manual, better on gas, more fun and I like the control when 4by'n.

Second Gen....I imagine the auto, I had the 6spd it was clunky, whinny, problematic, baaaad on gas. Have to admit though still more fun to drive than the auto if you didn't have to pay for the repairs or gas.

 

Manual tranny no doubt. I want to choose what gear I'm in. And since I'm 2wd, I've got wayyy more control for driving in snow.

 

5-speed here, just came from a 96' integra so......I still got the manual bug in me. My work van is automatic, after a long day in that I can vibe up and shift my butt home.

 

I like the Automatic trans/4.0 v6 combo. I guess as you get older it's harder to hold onto your beer(s)...

 

my dad either read it out of his owners manual or a mechanic told him. I used to downshift with my 78 Bronco all the time and it ended up tweaking and bending up the shift linkage inside the transmission, that was not a fun repair. Ford C6 automatics are no fun to take apart!

 

You might find that transmissions have changed since 1978

It's funner to drive, you can really get it going when you need to, and when you're just cruising down a highway you can pop it in 5th and relax.

way more control, you choose your rpms, torque reserve, everything.

X3. you cant downshift into first going 80mph but Ive never heard, or seen where downshifting hurt anything.

 

2nd Gen auto is better on gas

 

I like the manuals (had a 88 4Runner stick shift with 250,000 miles and no issues (had original clutch when I sold it) but from what I read about these newer manuals I'm glad I went with the automatic this time around.

 

first truck at 18 was a manual. quickly learned if i planned to live in the city, i needed an auto.

 

I agree , I shift down for lights and hills too
