So, I have a question! Could the rear diff gears be changed to give you better MPG on the interstate??? Or maybe just change the 6th gear for a longer one?????     Or would you have to change the whole transmission? Seems to me that the lower gears would be good for offroad, hauling weight, pulling, etc.... but if you could just change the 6th gear (which would not be used for most of that) it would improve your cruising MPGs..... right?

The transmission choice depends on how u want to use your truck. I'd opt for auto if I wanted to climb and crawl over obstacles, but since I have a 2wd locked truck I want to build it for speed and general desert terrain-whoops, sand, the occasional river cross and smaller rocks. My truck is very capable for a 2wd off road but definitely no where near 4x4 territory. You gotta work hard to get a 2wd 6speed up a rocky section, it slips, the clutch burns and you sweat bullets. The 4x4?? Doesn't even flinch...

I drove the auto and manual and I can safely say the 6speed would take the auto at the stop light every time. majority of my driving is on the road and there is nothing more fun than chirping the tires from 1st to 2nd.

    Manual.

    My wife drives a slushbox.
    My children will not.
    Too easy to get distracted.

My first car was an auto and I had many near misses. My second vehicle [5spd S-10] required more involvement and improved my overall driving skills. If you can change a CD and smoke while downshifting and negotiating corners with a stick, you can do about anything. I loved the manual in my Impreza, there is something visceral and primal about rowing through the gears under power.

I am new to the Taco 6-spd , and I am learning to dislike the computer stepping in when I shift. My Impreza would engine brake on demand and required an active right foot to keep her happy, but the Taco won't even slow when I let off the gas. I really like to use engine engine braking, it is frustrating but I will adapt.:(

That sucks; glad I don't have that issue, when I let off the gas my engine breaks now.

I've had two vehicles to my name, an explorer and the tacoma. The explorer was an automatic, and the coma a manual.

I'm learning how to drive manual with the coma, I'm loving it so far. Some days I get in the truck and think "damnit, I shoulda gone auto", but once I start shifting (abruptly =X ) it just FEELS so much better than an automatic. I've driving other manuals but very briefly only. Transmission is LOUD compared to the others(legend/integra/civic/eclipse) though. Feels a little clunky, but it IS a truck.

Manual for trucks and sportscars. The 2010 has shifting on the wheel and downhill assist. Still glad I got the 6 speed 3,000 rpms = 83 mph..... But there is somthing special about the whay my Avalon shifts, smooth, hardly feel it bur punch it to the floor and im still banging gears in my truck while my wife flys by in the car.

So then, tell me why my buddies Evo that puts out somewhere around 400hp to the ground has a 5 speed race transmission, his dad's V8 Vantage has a 6 speed, and another buddies dad's ZR1 has a 6 speed?

i love driving a manual for hauling and in vehicles where high torque and big horses come in when you race it is alot easier to lauch from higher rpm's with a standard but my truck is an automatic, and i love it, i learned how to drive in a 92 isuzu pick up with a 5 speed, but like i said i love my automatic, if you get bored driving then play with the radio or something.

After reading that, I tried it. Even my completely stock 2.4 can do it. Granted, it was raining, and uphill, but it will do it :)
