Have the 6sp in my 2010 DR OR. It definetly takes some getting used to though. I've had 6 different manual trans. vehicles over the last 13 years and driven many others that I didn't own, and I think the 6sp. in my Taco is the hardest to really get used to.

Yep, I've been saying the exact same thing for years now. I think it's mostly the feel of the clutch on my truck though. I've had my Tacoma for nearly three years now, and I still feel more comfortable with a lot of clutches in other people's vehicles that I don't even typically drive than I do my own.

If I'm driving a street rod then hell ya, I'd go manual. But for the love of hay-zuse, it's a truck. Buy what you will be more comfortable with, not what everyone else thinks you should have.

I suppose either can have its problems. There are a lot of great reviews of the auto transmission in this truck. But I have also read a lot of threads talking about their auto shifting at goofy times and having generally unacceptable behavior. I prefer to have as much control over my truck as possible, and that includes the transmission.

I also kind of think being able to roll start your truck is a nice option to have. I haven't had to do that in many years (never with this truck), but I'm glad I can do it if I would need to.

Get the auto- always loved manuals, but now with one hand on the wheel and the other holding a drink...coffee- you can't go wrong!

I test drove a 05 tacoma 4x4 manual and I just couldn't get into it. I am use to driving sport cars and was use to keeping it in each gear higher, but the 6sp tacoma gearing is diff so I had to get use to it. But in the end I opted for the Auto because I like the way it felt better. I would say test drive both and see what fits you better. Steve

I have an 09 4x4 DC 6speed and I personally havent had any problems yet. But there is a pretty well document problem with the 6speeds. Apparently the pilot bearing is made out of steel, while the pilot shaft which it sits on is aluminum. Well over time the steel beats up the aluminum and you end up with a squealing type noise whenever you engage the clutch. This is the only thing that i regret about getting a manual transmission, knowing in the back of my head that this problem is going to rear its ugly head. And the only way to fix it is to replace the whole bell housing since the pilotshaft and bell housing are all one piece. Unlike in regualr vehicles where you can take the pilot shaft off of the bell housing.

The M/T FJ people also have this problem....
