I first learned to drive stick on a '99 Corolla which didn't have a tach so I do completely by feel/ sound & pitch of the engine and rarely look at the tach. When I am trying to be better on mpg yeah it's probably below 3k, otherwise don't look at all.

I shift at ~2k when unloaded, and ~2.5k when loaded with stuff over 500lbs.

Where did I mention 'redline' in my post?
SO, you got "redline a day" out of that statement? Really? Unfreakingbelievable....

There's also strong evidence that about 75% of what you read on the internet is pure bullshit.

Tell ya what, you just go ahead and putt-putt around an don't dare take it over 2K rpms. Hope it works out for ya.

Can't tell if you're being serious or not.
Came off a little aggressive on some one just pointing out the "redline a day" theory.

    I'll assume you're serious.

You're being an asshole now because....? I gave no attitude in my post, simply put something out there about their being mixed opinions... but if you want to get all butt hurt and soil your panties over the internet fine by me boss

Hey, not prob here. Maybe I took it wrong. Hell, maybe I am an asshole...
FWIW, I agree there are different opinions & theories. I just didn't think my post was any thing about an "Itialian Tune Up" or redline a day.
What I was trying to convey, is it's just fine to run 'em up to 3-4K once in a while. Never said bounce it off the rev-limiter daily for good measure.
Whatever though, ya all enjoy. I do.

It's really easy on a syncro gearbox... it's also really bad for the syncros unless you know what you're doing and practice doing it properly every time. I used to do it for giggles in my 1st gen and try to match the revs, but anything close would get you in the gate. Don't plan on doing it with the expensive, bitchy 6 speed.

I try to shift around 2500, I don't know how some of y'all are short-shifting at 2k... sounds like it would be lugging pretty badly?

Mine doesn't lug unless I've got a load going up a steep hill or something. If on flat ground or normal conditions, the only time I feel lug is under 1k. That's where you'll get vibration and I wouldn't recommend it.

I know this is an old thread - but did some searching because I wondered a bit about the shift points in the owner's manual. This '07 Tacoma has the tallest gearing of any 4 cylinder vehicle I've had, which I really like. The engine is certainly capable of keeping up with a slight grade on the highway at 65mph. The engine seems efficient around 2350 rpm, about what it is at 65 mph in 5th.

My particular truck though seems to shudder a bit, hard to describe drivetrain noise if I shift into 4th at the recommended speed of 37 mph and depress the accelerator a bit from there. If I'm very light on the accelerator and level ground it's fine. Maybe it's the age and mileage, about 145,850~k. Same with 3rd gear. A 2006 I test drove with lower mileage didn't do that.

Not going to worry about it yet - my question for now is do you shift similar to what the owner's manual says? It's a different situation to and from work where there's several hills. Even though I'm around 50 mph I'll stay in 4th (manual says shift@ 44mph) since I'm going uo a slight hill. Staying in 4th I'm at around 2300 rpm, which the engine seems to like.

I'm SO glad I'm back to a manual transmission - been driving them since 1979. Anyone looking for one, especially in a 4WD truck will know they're getting scarce.
