Manual Tacoma, noticing some things. Are they normal?

So I just bought my first Tacoma, actually my first truck.... It is a 2017 TRD Sport, Manual Transmission. I've not iced a few things and I'm not sure if it's normal or if I should take it back to the dealer. I've only had it for a week and a half. The truck was used at 64,000 miles. Very clean...... The first thing I've noticed is in lower gears when I engage the clutch the truck feels like it jerks slightly, I read on another forum that this could just be I'm engaging the clutch too quick after letting off the gas. Which seems like it could be it..... The other thing I was wondering, I've stalled it a couple times since I'm getting used to driving a manual again after 8 years without one..... Well I stalled out leaving my driveway in reverse. When I went to restart it just kept turning over and the engine wouldn't start. Once I shut the truck completely off it started up again. And has started fine the couple times since. But that doesn't seem normal to me. Could the starter be bad? It does sound like it takes half a second too long to start when I initially turn the vehicle on to go somewhere, or is that normal?

There jerkiness may be the accumulator in the hydraulic line. Many people remove it and put a hard line in. I plan on doing that once I make room in my garage..

I've noticed hard starting when I stall a bit. I just turn the key back before starting after waiting a moment. Sometimes it helps. I don't really worry about it too much. I chalk it up to a mild case of flooding that the fuel injection takes care of after a few cranks.

Clutch engagement is way at the end of the lever action in my tacoma and has been since new. Makes it jerky until you get used to it. I noticed the non start thing back when i stalled it a bunch getting used to it. Obviously the issue goes away once you get a hang of the clutch and no longer stall. Other than that it always seemed to start after going to off on the ignition and retrying

    Welcome!

Look up the clutch accumulator delete, seems to improve clutch modulation for the 6-speeds, I don't have first hand knowledge because the 5-speeds don't have it.

Mine takes longer to crank over after stalling too, done this since new so I wouldn't worry much about it.

The clutch can be feathered just fine once you get used to it. I'd chalk the jerkiness up to it having a good friction surface and your eight years worth of cobwebs. I have done the ADM (Accumulator Delete Mod) and would not advise you do it until you find the friction point and train your brain to ease off of the clutch. Basically, learn to drive it as is then decide if you want greater clutch feeling.

As for the stall, the most recent inlet temp reading is a component of the ECU's decision to add more or less fuel when you go to start. Without moving off of the "ON" position, the truck will try to add additional fuel when you go to restart. As I understand it, if you go all the way to "OFF", hold down the accelerator, and start the truck, the ECU will restrict flow to the injectors until the engine is on.

    Welcome to TW!

I stalled a few times and did notice it does take much longer to start the engine, i wouldnt worry about it too much. It was doing that when my truck was new.

Much easier to stall in reverse due to very high gear ratio, look up 2WD MOD just for shits.

Regarding the jerkiness, mostly comes down to the driver of course. But as others have mentioned, might wanna look up ADM mod for a better clutch feel. My truck used to "chatter" when starting up hills, its gone now after ADM. Not sure if you experience the same thing but i hope that helps.

I didnt really have a problem with jerkiness with the accumulator, was just a bitch to revmatch downshift and sometimes general driving. Had to do a lot of guessing, i thought it had to do with having brand new clutch but then i read about the accumulator on TW. Best mod ive done so far.

    Good luck!

2020 here. Stalled it twice. Both times it was longer to start right back up. So must be common.

Your skewp is temporarily on your truck. One of these days you're going to wake up to a silver OR hood bolted nicely to your truck. I'll leave the hood gaps perfect.

Thank you all! This puts my mind at ease, I was worried I would have to go battle the dealership.... I will definitely look into the Accumulator Delete Mod. I do actually get some chatter, my father actually made me pop the hood when I pulled up his driveway because he wanted to check it out. But I had already noticed it was mainly on hills. He then pointed out that Toyotas run with somewhat if tick to them. (started my sister's car on the spot) and it has slight ticking sound..... They all drive Toyotas, my dad an older Highlander, my sister a Camry, and my uncle a Tundra, and my Aunt drive a newer Highlander

You will get the feel for it soon enough. Don't forget. your truck has a hill start feature. The brakes hold for a second after you take your foot off the brake pedal. I wasn't used to that, and stalled out a few times on certain inclines.

Now I'm used to it, and I like it.

The jerkiness sounds like driveline wrap from a quick clutch engagement. As you get used to driving it, you will get better.

The stall and then taking a minute to restart, was the starter engaging and the engine turning over, but not starting? If it was I am thinking that the ECM is doing a flood clearing mode, shutting off the injectors to clear excess fuel from the stall. I have noticed this too. I am wondering if Toyota programmed that in rather than the older method of putting your foot to the floor to clear the flood.

Oh and welcome to the forum :hattip:

Whoa. I didn’t know that. I was bitching about not having a hill start feature because as soon as I take my foot off the brakes, the truck rolls back. I got used to it in my other two cars. Time to search through the menus to figure out how to turn it on.

Hill start assist is on sport and maybe sr only. Its not on OR or Pro.

    Clutch start cancel you mean?

Its meant to get you out of hairy situations off road when you are in 4LO, completely different from hill assist.
