    Hi Folks,

I'm in the market for a new vehicle and the Tacoma is on my short list. I've been looking at the TRD Sport, TRD Off Road and the TRD Pro. I'm mostly interested in the manual transmission. Question though....I grew up driving manuals but I recently drove my brother in law's WRX and that vehicle had what he called a clutch brake. Gotta admit, it wasn't easy to get used to but it's definitely a nice feature for a manual tranny. Does the Taco manual have a similar feature? For those that aren't familiar the WRX did not require a traditional handbrake and clutch combo when starting on a hill.

    Thanks!

Sounds like the WRX has hill start assist. The tacoma does not have that.

Edit: apparently the sport has HSA but not the OR

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Good driving skills negates the need for a feature like that.
Been driving manuals since puberty - never found a hill that I couldn't figure out how to get moving up on.

the Sport has HSA hill start assist. the Off Road and Pro models do not have HSA.

but I'm not sure why you mention clutch start cancel in the thread title. it has nothing to do with HSA.

Thanks guys. Yeah, maybe I'm using the wrong terminology. I learned to drive on a 74' MGB on the hills of San Francisco. I definitely mastered the skill of starting on a STEEP hill with traffic behind me. I'm mostly curious because my BIL's WRX really through me. I actually found that it made my hill starts more difficult at first until I learned to trust it. Thanks again!

My brother in law called it a clutch brake so hill assist didn't ring a bell. I thought that "clutch start cancel" may have been Toyota's terminology for what I now know is hill assist.

Clutch start cancel allows you to start the vehicle, in gear, without depressing the clutch. So the electric starter is actually going to propel the entire vehicle until the motor turns over. It’s apparently a useful off-road feature. I exclusively use it so that I can reach in and start my vehicle (in neutral of course) while I’m standing outside

clutch start cancel is a feature to move the truck using the starter motor. normally you must press the clutch pedal to engage the starter with the ignition.

While I agree with you a 100%, the HSA does save the clutch a bit.

Luckily the 3rd gen Tacoma's still have a handbrake. When I first learned manual I used the handbrake to keep myself from rolling back on steep hills.

Your BIL may have a clutch-brake on his Subaru, I've just never seen one on a passenger car.

The hill assist is ok I guess, never had it before. The clutch start cancel button is a must, so nice to be able to start the truck without getting in.

I've had multiple manual vehicles and the tacoma is the first to have the hill assist. I think it's fine. So many people stop right on your ass at a stop sign or light. I am fine with the hill assist kicking in, for a second. It doesn't impact the driving experience at all.

LOL! when I first got my truck (5 sp manny tranny) I stalled out a few times cause I was pulling the e brake on hill starts.

I was like " hey WTF???" Clutch start cancel is useful on, and very useful off the trail.

Subaru's hill start assist holds the brakes momentarily while transitioning from braking to starting off. It releases a second or two after foot comes off brake peddle.

I drove my 2017 Sport for over a year before I figured out it had the hill start assist.
Then it dawned on me why I may have stalled it a couple of times:anonymous:

I figured it out while sitting at a unusually long stop light on a slight incline
