Yeah, I've had MTs of many types including an unsprung clutch hub in a truck. This one just seems particularly finicky.

I hear you man. I would highly recommend the ADM if you havent done it yet.

OVT seems to help a lot of members, but i cant speak on that. Im ok with stock tune,

    For now.;)

Edit: i would love to drive OVtuned MT taco to see how it actually is.

Similar issues for me as well going from 1>2. Getting better but not as smooth as I like. Full stock on mine.

You're not too far away. I wouldn't mind an excuse to cruise up to the duty free shop.

I shift 1-2 between 2-3k rpm, just need to (quickly) blip the gas a little and smooth in she goes.

But yes OP, this truck is harder to drive smoothly than all other MT's I have driven (93 Ford Ranger, Porsche 928, Jeep Rubicon, 89 CRX Si, Mits Eclipse, 95 Nissan pickup, 01 Jeep Sahara, 12 Chevy Cruze) :) :)

Dont shove the stick into gear, just gently nudge it against the gate and when it falls in naturally let the clutch out smoothly. - how to drive literally any manual transmission smoothly, ever.

    Youre welcome.

I see you have a '19. Compared to the early 3rd gens, your rig drives much, much better. Trust me, I know :)

Has anyone tried 'double clutching' to see if that will alleviate any of the MT eccentricities? :crapstorm:

Might not be a bad idea. But if i love how it drives, i would have to shell out 700$, or i wont enjoy my truck anymore:rolleyes:

Yeah, but $700 over 6mo with PayPal, and it might pay for itself with an MPG (or whatever the normal part of the world calls it) bump.

Sounds reasonable. How much did your gas mileage improve?

I saw 1mpg before doing the DTC and LV Resets and another afterward. I got another 0.5 on the first 2.0 Beta test file. So about 22 mid summer. I'm bac to the low 20s with new ATs, winter fuel, and these temps.

2mpg would pay it back in 5yrs at 12,000mi/yr and our gas prices. Higher the price, the faster the payback.

I got slightly bigger tires, and it drives more like a truck.

I find the truck hates to shift when it’s chilly out, until it warms up. Depending on my mood, I’ll shift early out of 1st (not in a hurry), or get it up to 3500 rpms and then shift, I do not feel that’s a smooth shift.

I was under the impression the 3rd is a vastly smoother shifting trans than my 2nd gen. I guess not, seems to be plagued with the same issues.

Thats not bad at all man. I have e rated bfgs and i average 19 in summer and 17.5 winter 90% city driving.

So with OV the engine makes more power and gets better gas mileage, interesting. I mean toyota engineers are not dumb, but why they couldnt improve the stock tune.
    This is all very intriguing.

I might start reading the OV tune thread a bit more.:spending:

It took me a week to get used to the clutch... but now I can be smooth or rough... depends on her mood... and mine

Having put over 260k on my second gen 6 speed, I can assure you the 3rd gen transmission has a far superior shift feel, and pairs better with the 3.5 compared the the 4.0 6 speed matchup.

    Interesting......
I just bought my truck a few months ago, but I’m really curious to drive a 3rd gen manual just to compare

Yeah. It is a bit weird and OVT notes that it passes EPA emissions.

I'm not sure what the Toyota peeps were thinking, but I have not seen a downside to the tune yet other than a small bit of strangeness on the last Beta test file.
