Hi I’m new here. This is a forum for people who show interest in a common vehicle - the Toyota Tacoma. So why is there such a seemingly nasty battle between AT and MT people? Is it all an inside joke between the forum veterans? Or is this just some weird hostile internet community akin to many areas on Reddit?

Some questions just don't have a good answer. I would say though that for some reason what you're noticing is much more pronounced in the third gen sub-forum compared to all the other sections of this site...

I think that’s probably it - I’m still trying to get a hang of the humor here. But some of these guys seem pretty serious when standing for their transmission!

For 1-2. Wait 1-2 seconds before you shift for the rev hang to deactivate. When you shift to 2nd, engage your clutch at about half the RPMs of what 1st gear was going at.

Yes. Very much a slightly hostile inside joke.

Welcome and enjoy the fun. TW and the crew are a lot of sarcasm and fun with a ton of technical knowledge.

You gotta pull OVT off that list because it is just as applicable to MTs as it is to ATs.

For the rest, they are nearly free mods. Also note that the ADM came from the 2nd Gen folks.

Double clutch like in a semi won't work very well because the clutch accumulator makes the cluth engage/disengage too slow. You'll probably grind gears.

If we don’t stop all the complaining about MT and AT, Toyota is gonna screw us all with a CVT.

The transmission itself is night and day difference in ease of shifting compared to the 2nd Gen.

Toyota’s hybrid CVTs are bulletproof reliable. Maybe the AT owner will quit whining if they get a transmission that doesn’t shift...

Do they do that simulated gears thing? My sisters subaru does that, and it seems kinda dumb.

Toyota’s hybrid CVTs use a planetary gear, so it constantly hold a rev as you apply throttle and get up to speed. The Subaru’s use a conical chain system and they’re garbage despite the praise they receive. My 17 outback had a CVT crap out in 16k miles. Subaru did extend warranties on them to 100k miles, but they also cost about 8k to replace. The one on our Prius is extremely predictable lol, services just like a standard differential, and outlast basically everything else on the car. Just drain and fill Toyota WS every 30k miles.
