Hey guys, just curious about how your trucks shift. Because mine has always been sort of picky about the clutch. I've owned 6 manual rigs and this is the first one that I can't figure out what the trans likes for the life of me. I buck this thing more than all of my other cars combined.
It just seems like no matter how slow or fast I let the clutch out after a shift it always wants to buck. If I'm really thinking about it I can shift it smoothly, or if I shift and stay off the gas for 2 or 3 seconds it's fine too. But it just seems like the trans is never happy with how fast or slow I let the clutch out with how I normally drive. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that it stays at the same RPM as when I was driving for a few seconds after I push the clutch in, it just hangs there. And I get that it isn't a sports car so I'm not gonna be speed shifting it, but I had an 87 f150 that shifted way smoother than this truck. My rav4 shifted kinda shitty though, so I'm wondering if it's just a Toyota thing. Synchros are good because it goes in and out of gears fine, occasionally have minor trouble getting in reverse but every manual car I've had has had that issue. Another thing it does is when I'm doing 40-70 and let off the gas completely, it thuds / clunks when I get back on the gas again, most noticable in 5th gear. It isn't severe but very noticeable. I don't think axle wrap could cause anything that noticable, possible bad carrier bearing or trans mount?
I just hope it isn't the trans internals. Only thing I know for sure is that the slave cyl desperately needs a flush. But as always any advice or info is appreciated!

My shifting improved with synthetic oil. As for the sound, i would definitly check the mount and the bearing. I would also look at the drive shaft joints and check for play. I would flush the fluid in the clutch and make sure it adjusted at the pedal. There is a write up some where on taking up the slack or something. There is also a bushing on the shifter that can go bad causing it to be sloppy at the stick.

I added a bigger shift knob and a longer stick also made it feel more positive, but it might also have slowed the action down do to a longer throw.

Sounds almost like a bad Transmission mount or carrier bearing .

Maybe even a Engine mount .

Could be water in the fluid over time from condensation has caused things to rust making the return slower then it should be.

With the swings in temperature in Vermint

It's a 180k original as far as I know, PO may have replaced it but I couldn't tell ya.

No doubt about water in the lines, the fluid is pitch black. You might be onto something with the engine mount, because when it idles down to 6-700 rpm the whole truck shakes. I had a Volvo 240 that did the same and it was an engine mount. I'm sure my carrier is shot too, after I lifted it I heard a constant squeak with every rotation of the driveshaft, sounded like rubber on metal, and it came from the middle of the truck.

My truck does the same thing. You just have to be easy on the clutch. As for the clunking, mine also does that too. It's probably a mount somewhere. Maybe driveline or trans.

I'll definitely check out how to adjust the pedal, plan to flush the fluid today if I can get the bleeder open. I wouldn't be opposed to a longer shifter, I miss my f150s 3 foot throw to be honest, I thought it was fun. My other car has a short shifter and I hate it.

Well mines done it for 20k miles and I'm sure it did it when the PO owned it, so can't be too big of an issue haha

I don`t have any issues No clunks no bucking .

I would guess about 40 Thousand on a all new clutch and hydraulics .

New Transmission mount from 4X Innovations that does cause some vibration at idle but one gets used to it.
