Ya, I hear the clunking too. Generally when I'm pulling into my driveway.

Would be interesting to know what it is.

You'll figure it out. This was my first truck and I had the same issues. I have come from a line of acuras, saabs, subarus, fords and Porsches all with manual transmissions. This was the hardest to master.

yeah i know its normal at some point because u need play in the drivetran (it is shaft drive) but mine don t need a big transfer of torque to clunk(different rpm) i don t know if we had a wrong batch of shim in the rear diff so its too loose. i am gona try to drive 2017 see if it is the same thing .

The clunk is most likely the rear diff. You got big heavy tires on your rig?

Mine does the the same thing. I found if completely let off the gas slowly before pushing in the clutch it will not clunk.
Every vehicle I have owned other than my 08 taco has been a manual and it's taken me almost 10k miles to get smooth with driving my 16

Yeah I know the clunking has been mentioned for years on the Tacoma. It isn't a new thing. It also hasn't ever caused any ill long term effects. I always just thought it was normal for the vehicle, but now someone is saying theirs doesn't do it at all?

I tested it out on the way home from work today. Any "quick" shift under about 2800-3000 RPM I got clunking/banging metal. Seemed to be worse the lower the RPM. Sloowwwly pushing the clutch down minimized the noise or provided no noise at all.

I also hear the banging metal and get some lurching if I go over a speed bump at really low speed in 1st or 2nd gear (by low speed in 2nd gear I mean 8 mph or less and 1st gear less than maybe 5 or 4 mph).

I just adjust my driving accordingly to avoid all of it. I don't mind shifting at a higher RPM in 1st, I'm sure the truck can handle it. I don't think it is the differential, but I am getting my rear differential replaced in a couple weeks (howling issue) so I'll see if there is a difference when that one is installed.

Just to clarify, I didn't say that mine doesn't clunk. I just said that it doesn't happen while shifting out of first gear. I know the clunk that you guys are talking about. Mine does do it when I hit bumps with slack in the drive train. It just doesn't do it while I'm shifting. Then again, I seem to be the only person saying that it's smoother to shift out of first early. Most everyone else holds first longer apparently.

Anybody on here think the TRD Quickshifter could help out at all? Could you somehow change the gear ratio? You gotta concentrate when driving this one for sure.

Just saw this thread come up again, same clunk with new differential (only the carrier assembly, or third member was replaced). The clunking and clanking sounds like it is directly under me.

Mine use to clunk but I believe it's the way you shift and release the clutch. I have no clunk after I learned how to drive this type of MT. There is a learning curve that you will get if you try to be as smooth with the transition between gears. After a 1000 miles of break it in, it shifts like silk. My son who has a 17 4x4 OR MT on order and who drive tested mine had the clunk happen to him where he was considering getting the auto trans but has decided to go MT after learning the this MT. Let the flywheel, pressure plate and clutch break in together and you will love it. $.02

Haha. Im able to downshift 2-1 at speed, but only at very slow speed. I actually had my toyota tech buddies ride it to see what they think of the clunk. Had a hard time recreating it with them because I have learned to not do it as much. Sounds more like it's from the bellhousing than the diff. I find myself letting out and pushing in the clutch very slowly, so much so I'm worried about wearing it out fast. I can shift 1-2 fine slow or revd up, but that normal speed is tough. Kinda wish I had gone auto at times. Also anyone else get a ton of vibration while stopped in the clutch peddle, while reving up to accelerate? I'm hoping toyota updates the engine programs a little bit. I'm also in the "slight misfire" thread and I'm starting to lean towards wonky ecu

I'm also not happy with the rpms we need to be in a good powerband. 2800+ is pretty good but who drives around wound up at 3500 rpm? Plus it has that dip in power at 1500-2k which is exactly when you need it. It's a quick truck, but it's like they wanted it programed it to be burn out proof

Mine has always clunked. Sometimes it's when shifting, sometimes I notice it when changing from acceleration to deceleration. A year ago I did the T56 mod along with a new 3rd member. Still have the clunk. So this week I put it on a lift and while in neutral rotated the drive shaft back and forth by hand. The noise was very pronounced and definitely in the differential. So it seems there is more play than needed and that something needs to be shimmed.

Most of the time I'll just use 1st on hills or if I'm towing. I normally have no problem starting up in 2nd gear. What we need in our trucks is a damn 7th gear for the hwy bc my mpg sucks ass.

    Subaru STI's 6-speed readily shifts info 1st, and even Legacy's 5-speed isn't too bad.
