Hello my yota problem has brought me here. I feel like my clutch is slipping. I smell burning and saw smoke out rear end on one occasion, going up a considerable hill. I have a 2.7, 5 speed. Truck has 175,000 miles. My e brake also needs replaced and is not functioning currently. Question is how do i know if it's a clutch or a transmission problem?

While driving along at about 35-40 mph, shift into 5th gear and give it some gas. If it bogs down, the clutch is good. If the revs shoot up, but you dont feel any forward movement, it's your clutch that's slipping. Likely just time for a new one after 175k.

Thanks! I will give this a try. So you don't need to buy new cables for the e brake?

Pull drums and check your shoes. As for the clutch/transmission, I'd say you're begging for a new clutch at 175k miles. Definitely try driving in a high gear at low speed to see if the clutch slips. You'll have to drop the gas to the floor to identify slip, don't attempt to feather it at all.

Will do, thanks. Also would there be a bad odor and smoking if it was the clutch? Would that mean there is a leak somewhere?

It depends. A burning clutch has a very unique smell. It could be smoking, but that would depend on the circumstances. When are you seeing the smoking? Where is it coming from?

I'm seeing the smoke when I was going up a considerable hill and the truck was revving but not moving.

Yes these are all symptoms and it sounds like its slipping badly. Clutch kinda smells like brakes, sounds like yours is on your last leg. They have a distinct burning smell

Also is it best to completely replace the clutch or rebuild it? Is there a certain one that I should look for? I really like my current clutch I have had no problems with it except for now.

Best to replace the clutch disc, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, and pressure plate. You can get a kit on rockauto. I ran a Luk 16088 in mine without issues. Itll be cheapest to resurface the oem flywheel, but those can also be had for about 75 bucks online for a new one if you dont have machine shops near you

Hopefully that's not an engine issue... What hue did it have? White, grey, blueish?

Like @BassAckwards said, just get a full kit. They come with the alignment tool and everything else you'll need. If you're not mechanically inclined, a tranmission shop will replace it for you for relatively inexpensive. You'll have to bring the flywheel in anyways unless you just replace it. I'm just realizing that I'm repeating what he said...

Yup. That also includes the flywheel, so no need to have the old one machined.

It actually has a lot more than what you need. That's for a full replacement to include the master and slave cylinders.

Scroll up on that RockAuto page and click on the submenu "Clutch Kit" and select one there then go down to "Flywheel" and select one there.

Ok so this is right? Does it matter what flywheel?
