Ah ok. Look like the 6 speed on my phone. Still would prefer the R to be away from 1st gear but apparently that is not an issue.

Definitely looks like it needs a short shifter mod.

I agree with this so much. I've really only ever driven manual trucks, and honestly prefer how they drive compared to most manual sports cars I've driven (370z, various BMW's, different generation Vettes)

Learned to drive in a '47 (?) Studebaker pickup without a tailgate. Had to be smooth. Had a '30 Model A Ford roadster here in the mountains for 27 years. Up and downshifting on all the passes without syncromesh. The Tacoma manual is a delight by comparison

I use that clutch start cancel button from time to time after work. It's not unusual for me to do 40k+ steps during a shift in steel toed boots and if my left leg is sore it's nice to throw it in neutral and use that button to fire it up rather than try to jam the clutch pedal into the Husky liner.

Looks about the same as the 2nd gen 5 speed throw to me.

Random question... does the new transmission whine at certain speeds like the old one? The 2nd gens affected seem to be around 55-60 mph if they do it. How about a vibration in the shifter in 5th gear when on the throttle? These are my two biggest complaints about my 07. Wondering if they addressed these yet

Haven't noticed any whine in the tranny. The only vibration I've felt/seen was road induced when I went over Old Lime Creek Road in San Juan County last weekend.

The six speed manual behind the 4.0L I had before never had any whine or vibration at all. It drove well, minus the occasional grind shifting into 4th thanks to the synchronizer. But this five speed... it never grinds but it sure does sing. Always has and probably always will. My biggest interest is that if I keep this truck long enough maybe I can try to scrounge up a used 5 speed tranny from a 3rd gen, if it'll bolt up. The shorter 1st gear, taller overdrive, and triple cone synchro on 1st would be a decent upgrade especially if they're quieter now.

Short example of what I'm referring to

This. Lots of resistance to get it all the way over before up into R, plus it beeps at you when you get there. I've seen smaller people need two hands to get the shifter into R.

Sold my '15 MT for a '16 MT. Love everything, but the lag/lack of power in 6th (& 5th) on hills. Yes (for all you haters), a '14 Tacoma dropped me on a grade heading home this weekend...
This confirmed my observation of having to downshift to 5th on same grades my '15 could stay in 6th...Went with 2 1/2 lift stayed w 265/70s. She still runs the same, with same mpg. Opted out of going with larger tires, seriously, imo motor doesn't seem strong enough unless you want to fish for gears all the time.
Tested an AT too before choosing MT, initial test drive impression was AT downshifts/shifts too sporadically when moderately accelerating or on grades compared to the MT.
Happy with MT as at least it prevents transmission from hyper-surfing. Hope Toyota comes up with some flashes/power mod improvements soon.(Also posted in "Big Thread...")

    She sounds great!
The 2nd Gens have that whine, almost turbo charger-esc (but much more subdued). Usually happens when accelerating in 3rd. I like it.
So so happy they still sell the 6spd manuals. :D

I haven't noticed any whine when accelerating, because the engine sounds too nice :) There is definitely a whine from the tranny that sounds like a turbine spooling down when slowing down without using the brakes (happens at low rpm too, so I won't call it 'engine braking'). It's especially noticeable in 2nd. This is with the 5-speed.

As long as it's not hurting anything / normal, I'm not complaining. I like a vehicle that talks to me via healthy mechanical noises as I drive.

I took the liberty of increasing the contrast for you so the sun is not so overwhelming. Hope that's OK.

Heck yeah it's OK. Thank you!

Does anyone else think the 5-speed shifter is mounted funny? I mean, 1st gear is pretty much vertical. Reverse is damn near horizontal. Neutral is drawing a line into the passenger seat's headrest. It just seems strange after years of rangers where neutral was pointed at the dead-center of the cabin roof between the seats.

I don't mind it, I just wonder how much more I'd like it if it pointed the right way, y'know? :p

The shifter points about the same direction as a 5th/6th gen Honda Civic IMO. About the same throw too

You should try a 6nd gen 6 speed... at least another inch in every direction! First is close to the fan dial, 6th is just about intruding on the right side cupholder, reverse almost gets cozy with the ebrake handle... looong throws. I wonder if the new one is improved in that regard.
