Doesn't look straight cut to me. Looks like a helical gear.

 

Generally, noise, vibration, and harshness are things that I like other than vibrations from unbalanced tires. Mechanical noises are a feature not an issue for me. Even more so with my motorcycle. I love hearing the valve tapping up the intake that is a straight run under my chin, hearing the timing belt whirring, and the clutch plates jangling during shifts.

Just me though.

Regardless. Four of those puppies turning at reduction speeds are going to make some noise.

 

It's a much larger gear in diameter than those gears. Doesn't look much different than this:

 

TBQH, the first time I shifted a truck into 4lo and heard that whine I thought it sounded pretty cool, but I left it at that. My curiosity about what causes the whine didn't get sparked until recently after I spent many hours over two days driving primarily in 4lo.

 

Okay. Still not a big helical angle. The low range is obviously whining from the gear set. NBD?

Or, are we in the Dumbgeon over gear teeth?

 

Ya, its not clear in the diagram that straight cut gears are being used. It's only a diagram though. The whine might also be an aspect of a planetary gear system.

 

It's not clear to me that the teeth need to be curved for the gear to be considered helical.

There's insignificant whine in 4Hi. There's whine in 4Lo. One shift fork moves. The causes are quite obvious and not correctable.

You're being unnecessarily confrontational. I'm sorry your ego got bruised, but don't start puffing your chest through the keyboard. It would have been pretty easy for you to say, "You might be right, they do kind of look helical. It's still obvious that the low range gears are making the whine", without the intended attitude. Instead, you reduced to being an ass.

I think I misunderstood this the first time I read it. I thought it meant the surface area of where the teeth contact each other was a segment of a helix. I'm having too many brain farts this morning. I now think what it means is the teeth themselves are a segment of a helix. It’s just not as visually apparent on larger gears compared to smaller gears.

Let me add a question into this mix. Is it ok to switch back and fourth 4Hi / 4Lo as needed on a trail or is it best to leave it in 4Lo until you absolutely need to get back into 4H or even back to 2WD? Did a 10 hour trail ride on the DBBB this past weekend with a huge group and my Manual Taco needed 4L many times, 4H and my clutch balancing act with giving it gas just wasn't doing it. Anyway, someone said, "you're not switching back and forth out of 4Lo are you?" . I said 'no', but I actually was. heh. Anyway. Since then I've been trying to research this a bit deeper. Thought I would ask the experts on the Internet. heh. Thanks all.
