Manual Transmission Cup Holder trim blackout

What have y'all done for MT cup holder trim black out? I take it MESO and AJT never did a replacement piece for us? Has anyone used a vinyl wrap on it?

 

Strip the chrome and paint the piece with Duplicolor Magnetic Gray Metallic to match other parts of the dash. That's what I did:



To strip the chrome, you take out the trim piece (it pulls straight out -- you don't have to disassemble the console) and immerse it in a bath of strong bleach and Drano for at least two weeks. The chrome plating and the copper substrate eventually flake off. The underlying plastic is black. If that's what you want, you don't have to do anything further. Just snap it back into place. I think it looks nicer painted in the slate gray.

 

Why not just scuff it and paint it?

You mean you don’t enjoy when the sun hits the plastichrome, then hits you in the face causing temporary blindness?

best part of my afternoon, just wondering when it will happen.

 

I used to keep a spare t-shirt in my Tacoma to cover the plastichrome for this reason.

Paint doesn't adhere well to the chrome plating, even if scuffed. Take a little extra effort and strip the chrome.

 

That looks pretty good. I have the inferno orange dash trim but it does look to be matching the trim around the MT

 

I used plastidip on mine, and used the plastidip clear coat over it. Came out good and looks way better than the chrome

Care to share the ratio of bleach to drain cleaner and specific products used? Different drain cleaners have different chemical make-ups. Also, disposal instructions? I assume dilute heavily with water and pour down a household drain.

 

Also i did not have to scuff the chrome trim to apply the plastidip. Best part about plastidip is if you mess up or you are over it you just peel it off and the piece underneath is just like it was before you applied it

 

The proportions are not critical. In fact, you could omit the Drano and have the same result, although it might take a little longer.

I used the extra-strength Clorox "outdoor" bleach, undiluted. Use a glass pan, and set it in a warm place outside the house (the garage would be ideal). This needs to be agitated at least daily. The solution will turn black after a few days. When it does, it needs to be emptied out and renewed. There will be a stream of bubbles as the bleach does its work. A copper substrate will appear after the top layer of chrome is dissolved. Leave the part in the bath and the copper will disappear as well. The key thing is patience! The process will take 2-3 weeks. Toyota chrome plating on plastic is durable. This is not like a plated toy.

Flush the used solutions down the toilet. Make sure that babies and pets don't have access to the bath while the process is going on. Might be a good idea to wear rubber gloves while handling the bleach. Try not to breathe the fumes.
