@OP: I’m sorry to hear about your truck repair dilemmas. I went through a major truck overhaul/repairs about 2 years ago myself with a clutch & carrier bearing replacement/front & rear differential baseline service and an engine swap after the headgaskets on my original engine block went out. I’ve spent about $7,600 in parts & labor to keep my truck running which is expensive, but I’m keeping my old Tacoma. No new truck or payments to deal with. My original clutch lasted about 275K original miles since I’m the original owner.

It sounds as if the original auto repair shop that serviced your clutch has done a poor repair job on your truck and hasn’t diagnosed the problem correctly. I would recommend going to another repair shop that’s knowledgeable about servicing Japanese vehicles.

Supposedly they were Toyota specialists (and were one of few available in San Luis Obispo). Only went back to them because they replaced the clutch they put in with a new one under warranty. But not sure if I want to stick with the Tacoma partially due to issues I've had, but also I think I just travel a bit heavy for a small truck when I live out of it for month at a time. Makes it hard to warrant another $1200+ bill at a trusted shop that only might fix the issue.

What did they claim to have done with the last clutch replacement?

I'm not an expert on manuals but this is sounding more and more like they either don't know what they're doing or don't want to own up to screwing something up

Pressure plate, clutch and flywheel the first time. Pretty sure they just did the clutch itself the second time around under warranty when they were trying to say that it wasn't the clutch and that it was a bearing and I'd be better off swapping out the whole transmission which sound crazy to me.

Either the shop is really poor and put a cheap clutches in both times.

Your driving style is hard on clutches .

You got 6000 miles of it working fine .

Could be a mix of both things .

If your clutch is slipping the sweet smell of burning clutch should be in the air

Do quite a lot of driving off road where two transfer cases would be a good idea

Just throwing this out there .

    OME and worth every penny.
After all this trouble I suppose nothing can be ruled out.

In HS a bud had a big Mopar that ate clutches and it did turn out to be the transmissions fault. Input bearing if I remember right.

At this point I'd research a second opinion from a reputable transmission shop in your area. Spend a little to possibly save a lot, plus you'll know for sure what the first place really did. If they didn't do all the repairs they claim get something in writing from the second shop, then sue the first guy in small claims court for what you paid and any additional damages

Never had problems with jumping out of gear??

You only have the slipping in 4th gear never any other gears ??

You never smell the fine aroma of burning clutch !!

I am guessing you did not see the parts removed last time ?

The strange thing is you had 6000 miles of no problems A transmission problem I can`t see going away for 6000 miles What caused the slipping now ??

Have you done anything different off road adventure??

Let the clueless drive your truck even if only a few miles some can destroy a new clutch

It is rough when your at the mercy of others to pull things apart

It always starts showing up in 4th, then over a couple thousand miles will happen in other gears.

Never smelled anything, and I drive windows down often.

They showed me the clutch they removed/replaced under warranty and it looked okay, they also said it looked lightly used.

No one else has driven it, and I haven't done anything beyond gravel fire roads and some light snow (under 3")
