Just some info on the RC transmission family that the 3rd gens have.

I might be on the look for a RC61F digging the ratios spread it has. Gotta start calling my guys in Japan and the Philippines. I'm smelling another hybrid trans like the R150/151/452 in my rock crawler.... In time... All in good time.

I'm a bit confused at all the comments that say this is a smooth and slick shifter/transmission (for a truck.) I found it to be rather horrendous, compared even to previous 1990, 2003 and 2014 m/t Toyota pickups I've driven. Very short gearing in 1st and that's to be expected, but the ratios seemed really weird.

What gives? Am I expecting too much? This was a new AC TRD OR. Is it the OR feel that's so much different, it wallowed like a beached seal far more than the DCSB TRD Sport AT I test drove immediately after.

The disappointment has me reconsidering a gen3 and maybe looking at a late model gen2 (I test drive a new 2015 6MT and didn't notice anything "bad" about the transmission, whereas with the gen3 right away I was "WTF is wrong with this?" )

Couldn't have been as they don't make an AC TRD OR in manual.

Get the 2nd gen...It will be a better fit for your type...jmho

I can only comment on my initial impressions, and take it for what it's worth but my impression right away with the 2016 OR was that "this is crude, WTF". Never had that impression driving any previous generation Tacoma, including a brand new 2015, a used 2003, and a 1990 from new (I last drove it in 2002 with about 300K miles on it, it's currently at 440K waiting for a head gasket job that may never happen.... and shift feel is the least of the impressions it leaves if you drive it now.. )

No, it's not as bad as the truck 3 speeds of yore I learned to drive on (1978 C15, 1983 E150) but there was something sorely lacking in the driving experience of driving the 2016; instead it was clunky, raspy, and distinctly agricultural.

The clutch action was very light and its engagement seemed very nondescript, completely the opposite of what one would expect given the shift feel. Anyway, who knows, I am definitely still on the lookout to drive another one, a TRD Sport this time hopefully, to get a sample size of at least 2.

I do believe the shift knob is taken from a 1983 Cressida, since the original was chewed down to the metal by an excitable vizsla.

I personally owned this exact truck that I bought new and drove for 200K miles, and now I have a 2016 TRD OR with 6MT. Remembering lots of good times looking at that interior.

The transmission on the 2016 is night and day better than my 1991. Maybe you just didn't get accustomed to it or it had a problem.

You have some valid points here. I felt the same way when I initially got into mine. Very short first, slow cumbersome shifts.
It gets better after its broken in. But the end result is the same - pure truck transmission. Nothing sports car about it. However once I got past the break in period I got past it a bit because the motor likes to be wrung out past 3k.
Personally after 22000 km and 6 months i find there's 2 modes. Chill mode and "race car" mode. I haven't been able to find a good happy medium.
good on the highway- 6th gear is usable for passing which is nice. (Edit- averaged 23 mpg easy this past weekend trip)

I've averaged nearly 22mpg for over 10,000 miles here at 7-11,000' DCSB Sport. Stock tires and the Sport chin spoiler might help

Yup. Deffinately not 120 km +.

It's 90 - 110 km. I was on the way back from a golf trip and passing through some National Parks so I was in between those speeds mostly. Good excuse to see how high I could

55-60 is the sweet spot. Mileage drops off pretty quick after 65.

Grr I'm getting this too now randomly and whenever I take it in it stops of course so I can't explain it to the dealer.

I got this too. It is pretty bad now and super annoying. Just give it a little more time and it will be reproducible 60% of the time, every time..
