I agree, reverse is way too high. Trying to back up a friend's gravel driveway fully loaded a while back and just couldn't make it happen. Was the first time in 20+ years I've smelled clutch and was the one at fault. I finished the task in 4LO and spent the rest of the day with my tail between my legs.

Yep if its gravel or dirt, 4lo always for steep or complex backing tasks.

I know we all love the manual but this is the one task that I wish I had an auto for. I can't believe I said that....moderators please ban me.

Reverse gear ratio is way too high for sure. I usually can't even let the clutch out all the way in reverse.

Glad the reverse thing isn't just me... Was wondering if I was doing something wrong. If I have a long distance to travel the clutch goes all the way out, but in tight situations I'm feathering it a whole bunch.

I drive mine 40 miles round-trip to work and back. About a third of that is on normal streets with stoplights every few blocks. The 1st to 2nd transition is very hard to get used to, I wouldn't recommend starting in 2nd though. To answer your request, I've heard the slushboxes rev-hunt like crazy. I live in CO and drive up through the mountains a lot, and wouldn't ever purchase an auto with the weekend driving I do. For another vote, I have a co-worker who has driven Tacomas for 15 years... test drove the auto once through the hills and absolutely hated it.

I think I'm feeling the same thing... seems like mostly in 2nd gear around 3500 rpms it tends to bog down and then boom power and I'm pushing the throttle to the floor... it's a weird feeling to describe it's like I want power and don't receive it on demand.. same way in 3rd gear...don't get me wrong I love this truck but damn I wonder how people lift these trucks and put bigger tires on them.. there's not a lot of power to move these trucks. Just my two cent

Ha i thought i was the only one with reverse being wayyyy to fast to let out the clutch. I was getting pissed today at feathering so I just let out the clutch completely in reverse every time, people probably thought I was crazy cuz the truck goes wayyyy to fast if you let it all the way out ha. BTW is every 3rd gen experiencing the real high clutch catch point? Its nice for changing gears without putting the clutch all the way down but never experienced that. This is my first manual daily driver I learned on a 69 camera that had a hurst 4 speed and a bitch of a clutch so this things butter but just not used to the high catch point.

I have driven my 2017 M/T Sport only about 200 miles so far, and am really enjoying the manual (shifts smoothly, no issues). However, the engine is strangely unresponsive under low load conditions. In first gear acceleration is poor, but shifting to second with the same throttle opening provides much more lively acceleration. And when rev matching on down shifts, the throttle has to be opened surprisingly far in order to get any significant rpm increase. No doubt, this is all a function of the electronic throttle software and I wish a chip would come out to correct this. Or maybe the condition will resolve itself once the engine computer adjusts to my driving style…

I was pleased to find that “heel and toe” down shifting is quite possible so that lower gears can be engaged during braking. The owner’s manual warns that operating the brake and gas at the same time may shutoff the engine but this actually has not happened. Also unexpected is that the pedals are set up quite well to facilitate “heel and toe” driving.

Brand new engine. Let it break in.

I've never heard of downshifting with the brake and the gas pedal at the same time. You've must learned an improper technique or I am clearly missing something.

I always downshift with gas & clutch. When I need to slow down further, I will press the brake pedal.

i wonder if what the instruction manual mentions about gas/brake engine shutoff is specific to Autos. i don't have my truck yet so i can't look myself. but in a manual, at least for a driver who rev matches by habit, i can see how both would happen at the same time. on the brake while downshifting and rev-matching... you have pressure on the brake and throttle at the same time, just not for more than a moment.

Only issues I've had with my '16 OR this far are:

    1. Gearbox tends to get stuck in the gates at times. It'll feel the shifter will not go through the motion until I shift into another gear and try again.

    2. The clutch pedal is squeaky to the point my passengers sometimes hear it. Truck has 6,500 miles.

Clutch disengages heavy on first gear sometimes, but I think it's more of an change I need to make with the truck over previous vehicles I drove.

Other than that, I love it. Truck is generally a gem to drive and people don't even realize it has a manual gearbox.

Take it in for the clutch pedal squeek. The dealer fixed mine and it lasted 2 years and 55k miles, they said they just greased something up so I need to get down there to look at it to re-grease. Mine is only really there on hot days too.

Release the clutch slowly is the trick. Had to find out myself while my dad was trying to teach me. Kept chirping the tires dropping the clutch instead of letting out slowly.

I have the same squeak in the clutch. It goes away the less humid it gets outside and at cooler temperatures.

Unfortunately, that weather doesn't exist in Hawaii. Didn't notice it in NorCal when I bought it, so it makes sense.

I have a service date in two weeks. I'll bring it up and tell them to lube all her crevices up.

I did the same here in Ohio, and their response was "It's all hydraulic, there's nothing to lube up." I laughed and said you guys are dumb I'll do it myself and left the place. They wanted a $30 fee for checking it that they didn't get.

My clutch pedal on my '04 was creaking pretty bad, lubed it with TriFlo lubricant and it went away for a few months. Came back with a vengeance last week, it's so loud you could probably hear it from outside the truck with the windows up. Took it to the dealer and they told me the whole clutch pedal assembly needed to be replaced, about $200 in parts and $350 in labor. F*** that.

It mysteriously disappeared a couple days ago and it's been normal now, but if it happens again I guess I'll have to look for an independent shop to do the work or maybe give it a go myself.
