You can get a stick shift on the very lowest base configuration of the Colorado with the gas 4 cylinder.

I dunno why Toyota chooses to keep making sticks but I'm happy that they do. I've had an automatic here and there over the years and just don't much care for them. Why that is I can't really say. The very large majority of the miles my butt has driven has been with a stick over the years and it may simply be habit.

It's only been recently that you just didn't just get stick shifts by default at the price points I paid, so it wasn't really an option. I do feel more in control of the truck with a stick shift, more like I'm actually driving and not just along for the ride.

I did just let the clutch out, and gassed her some. I'll see what the shop says, because I still don't think a feather touch on the skinny pedal in 4LO should warrant that.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll take a look but need to track down the torque specs.

If these were loose U-joint bolts this would be a horrendously loose set of bolts. I should be able to find out if thats the problem immediately.

It's because they use these same manual transmissions in the new hilux. Worldwide it's possible they sell more trucks with our manual transmission over the new auto. The new hilux auto also uses the 16+ Tacoma auto. But I'm sure it never hunts cause diesel.

Considering that my last vehicle was a 2014 Wrangler with half-doors, I think my Tacoma sounds as quite as an S-class Mercedes...

Just picked up my '17 TRD OR DC 6MT w/ premium and tech after a three month wait today. Traded in my 05 AC with auto and am super happy to be back in a stick shift. Overall very pleased, but still getting used to the 1-2 shift. Not the truck's fault, just my lack of skills for being out of the game for 12 years!

How are you guys handling your low speed 2nd gear driving? I damn near got into a lot of trouble today with 2nd gear at ~1200 RPM.

By where I live there is a round bend (oncoming traffic) where the speed limit is ~50mph, so you dont get much of a chance to see the other cars coming around the turn. I wanted to turn across the traffic into a shopping center and so i got into the middle lane, 2nd gear, slowed down and got to about 9-10 mph or so (or whatever roughly 1200 RPM is). I started my turn across the oncoming traffic lane only to see cars start barreling down the road towards me, so my only choice was to make my turn. However, I stomped on the gas and went absolutely nowhere, I'm talking the most abysmal acceleration I have ever encountered in any vehicle. Gas pedal to the floor and the RPM's just slowly, SLOWLY crept up as I rolled like a snail in front of oncoming traffic. Finally the RPM's got to a point where normal acceleration kicked in and I was good.

So are you guys downshifting to 1st in a scenario like that to not get yourselves killed or what? Having to downshift to 1st at 9-10 mph seems a little ridiculous, can this engine really not handle this or is there something wrong with my truck?

I tested it out on the way home, 2nd gear, 3rd gear at that low 1200 RPM range, mash the gas and absolutely nothing for a good few seconds until the RPM's SLOWWLYYYY creep up and normal acceleration kicks in.

What I can't stand about modern automatics is the damn gear hunting. They drive me insane.

They're now making 10-speed autos. I don't care about a few extra mpg's that much.

Anyone have a little difficulty sometimes getting into 1st gear, like it won't slide in? Caught myself unable to slide it into 1st once or twice today on the drive home. Usually after the second or third try it'll slip in.

Yes. The lower gears are very notchy. On the rare occasions mine wouldn't go into 1st, I would pull it back into 2nd to move things around, and then it goes into 1st.

Glad my Tacoma has a good old-fashioned 4-speed auto... 71K miles and no problems! My friend's coworker has a late model Ford Escape and the 8-speed nightmare in that failed at like 20K miles!

That's a weird range to be in and you'll find yourself in that grey area constantly. Easiest is to go back down to first and build back up.

Yeah not terrible compared to other manuals, but just wanted confirm that this wasn't an isolated issue.

I've got just over 10k miles on mine and I still haven't gotten the shift from 1 to 2 off a dead stop totally smooth. 1st is short as hell (which doesn't make sense unless you tow) and 2nd is typically too tall to start from. I find myself feathering the clutch just a hair longer to help.

I've found the engine/driveline hates being under 1500ish RPM outside of 1st. This may not be the right way to do it, but if I'm understanding what you're saying - when I encounter those situations I clutch in, coast through the bend and then clutch out as if I'm shifting back into second. I get better response instead the bog down of riding through the corner in 2nd and getting too low in the rev range. If that makes any sense...

used to happen more frequently when the truck was new, granted it's a 5 spd and not a 6 spd. Rarely happens now, maybe it's a break in thing.
