Understood. I'm quoting what the Toyota foreman actually told me. I guess it boils down to the same. Three failed attempts to repair the potentially dangerous stuck shifter issue he said Toyota would have to buy back my Tacoma.

But what about them essentially replacing part by major part on the drivetrain? Say transmission then transaxle then front and then rear differentials then driveshafts?? I assume then since it is multiple attempts to fix the same say howling noise issue but each time it's replacing a different part that in that scenario it would not qualify for a buyout. ???? In Connecticut I think the lemon law is in effect but I only heard what Toyota foreman told me. Thanks. Appreciate enlightenment. Dannyblues

I would say it falls under what they are trying to fix? I'm not 100% clear on how it works, but have had a couple friends deal with it. But they ended up getting buy outs in the end. Usually you go to court for lemon law when the dealership/company refuses to buy out. In the case you mentioned I don't think it would count unless they have a specific part they know is the issue. If you go in and say "I've got a howling in the rear end" and it takes you 4 times going back and them replacing different parts, then I imagine that might qualify, but again, they aren't replacing the same part over and over again.

I never realized they kept column shifters around that long. Dannyblues

I drove a 69 chevy 2wd pick up once with a column shifter. It made my 70 chevy 4x4 with 4 on the floor feel like a race car.

That's right even if theyve moved the shifter around so much that today the stick on the center console looks like an automatic! Until the idiot who doesn't know that and gets inside puzzled by the third peddle. maybe this one has two brake peddles. One for each foot. LOL. Dannyblues

I drove a dormmate's '71 Heavy Chevy Chevelle with a 3 on the tree when he broke his leg.

My brother also had a 68 Dodge A100 Van with 3 on the tree. You could bust your knuckles on the dash if you weren't careful.

I liked the column shift especially on a 55 Chevy with a blue flame six cylinder and optional overdrive. I loved the way that old car sounded. And how each shift lurched it forward. You could hear and feel everything. No hydraulic- dry clutch
Sure they were slow and clunky but that's the way it was. And I loved it. But happy too we progressed. Except for all the necessary electronic stuff. I didn't grow up with electronic stuff or computers. Did have an 8 transistor hand held radio though back in grade school.

That's why people like you and me and all of us on this thread have such a deep regard for the driving experience and control with a manual shift

Happily we still beat the automatics world wide!
52% manuals over 48% automatic world wide. Makes the old manual shift automobile the most popular on the planet. Dannyblues

I'm amazed that the 71 chevelle still had three on the tree. But not surprised about the knuckle buster. Pepsi where I worked had just junked their old ford vans with three speed column mounted shifters. The new guys in 1978 didn't know how to operate a manual transmission. Dannyblues

I had a 1961 Mercedes 190 diesel with 4 on the tree; a friend had a 1963 Simca that also had 4 on the tree, and I knew someone else with a 1966 Citroen DS 19 with 4 on the tree. These were all great fun to drive.

Now that's a big surprise!! I remember as a kid in the late 50's watching these cool guys with greasy hair like Elvis and white t shirts with their cigarettes rolled into one sleeve. Heavy blue jeans with big roll up type cuffs over engineers / motorcycle boots, drag racing an old in line 6 with three on the tree in a maybe 52 Chevy with rear fender skirts. I remember how they threw that second gear!!! Cool daddy oh. Dannyblues
