Hmm.. I've not tried it, but the brakes should not change when the engine is not running - as long as the key is still on. He has an OR like me, we have the electric brake booster (a pump, vice vacuum assist). Meh, I'm gonna leave my truck running anyway, cause power steering is nice!

Even with the engine off, in gear it is still spinning the motor so you do have power steering.

Anyone that wants to test this it is pretty simple.

While driving above 2000 rpm and in gear let off the gas, at some point between 1500 and 1000 rpm it will kick the injectors back on which is the problem people don't want when crawling.

Now do the same thing except after letting off the gas turn the key from ON to ACC. You will continue to coast with engine breaking but the injectors won't kick in. Tach and other gauges won't work but you'll have power steering.

I was out wheeling today and experienced the loss of engine braking as described first hand. 4Hi 1st gear, going downhill and holding back nicely from 2000 down to about 1300 RPM.. then it just "let go". I didn't try shutting it off. Too bad Toyota couldn't cause this function to be disabled when selecting 4Hi - or at the very least 4 Lo.. Anyway, something to be aware of.

It's because you're in to high of a gear at that point, if you're really engine braking you should have shifted to a lower gear once you hit about 2k rpms and revmatched properly. Engine braking is probably pretty nil at 1500 rpms or below. Crawlers are usually in 4LO and aren't really gonna be down that low in rpms since you want constant power on the wheels to keep the torque up. Shit I'm at like 3k rpms at about 5 mph in 1st gear in 4L0

Yeah I've given up on 4HI most of the time now even in snow, unless I'm being a total boss bombing dirt roads. To be safe, you gotta stay in 4LO and just start out in 3rd if you need to

Was this reply for me? What you maybe don't get is that the engine will hold back from 2000 all the way down to about 1300, then it will change "modes" and seems to free run all the way back up to 2000. Rinse. Repeat. I wasn't in 4Lo because I didn't need to be, just on a downhill section of logging road.
It's weirdness because it gives you inconsistent engine braking, regardless of which Tcase range you're in.

After a 2 month wait I'm finally back in the third pedal club. 200 miles already in the first two days I've had the truck and zero regrets.

I was driving some local logging roads yesterday (saddle mtn area) and enjoying the shit out of my new taco & I noticed a few things..1st off since day one driving the manual trans and being used to conventional engine response, like letting off the gas and the engine compression slowing you, the 3.5 has some different ideas, at slower speeds/RPM's I noticed it will act like a "normal" engine around 2000rpm unless your going down a steep hill then it wants to let go to about 3k rpm, then begins to feel like compression is slowing it down, it is different but not annoying or anything, in 4 lo it crawls along slow & steady. Anyone else notice this, & what do you think about it? One thing is engine complication factor/ more tech more fail points. I trust it...it's a Toy.

Anybody ever get a harmonic resonance sound when slipping the clutch? Every once in awhile when I have to slip the clutch a bit to get moving I hear a strange harmonic type sound. I can't tell if it's a heat shield vibrating or something with the clutch?

I think Toyota underestimates the demand of manuals. I think if they made twice as many as they do they would sell every one of them...................................

That’s exactly what the salesman told me at Desert Toyota in Tucson, AZ. I just bought a 2017 TRD 4x4 with a 6-speed manual, access cab. Had to order it and wait 90 days. The sales dept says they have to take what ever they are sent.

Probably means he shifted at slightly to low of RPMS and got the engine lug bounce. Also may have not given it enough gas. I mean it can happen from a variety of things if you aren't spot on with your shifts and rev matching. I still do it on occasion when I'm shifting slowly and not super paying attention...2nd gear will chug a little bit right after I let the clutch out. Usually cold engine and I'm not really giving it much gas to get going.
