For the Reverse, that gate does loosen up after a few uses. It's still a bit of pressure to make sure you're not accidentally throwing it in R, but much easier.

    None,
My SR is a manual 4X4 and it also has the hill assist,
With only 17000 kms (10563 miles) The dealer just replaced my release bearing, clutch disc and pressure plate do to a thumping bearing noise at idle while in neutral,
If you pushed the clutch in the noise went away.
This noise started at approx 7000 km (4349 miles) and could only be heard when the truck was warm.
It slowly started to get louder and happen all the time..
Funny thing is with all the new clutch stuff the truck shifts and feels smother than when I picked it up new. Just wondering if this was a build issue right from the factory.

Is it possibly the throw out bearing? This was an issue on the second gens and there was a tsb for it.

My truck sucks to put in Reverse too, goes thru the gate fine but sometimes takes 4 or 5 tries to finally go in.

Should there be any noise from shifting? Like what I explained above. It's like a slight hollow rattle when pushing in clutch and shifting then comes again at initial acceleration. Don't think I hear it just at idle, so not thinking it's same as above poster. Thanks for any insight. Prob just normal?

As far as reverse I can live with it. Maybe it will loosen as mentioned above. If it's not normal I just want to address it and the rattle. I love this truck waited 3 months for it and plan on enjoying for a long time. I however want to address things as they come. I also live 2.5 hrs from dealer so can't just swing by unfortunately to have them check it out. Thanks guys

So it seems like the rattle when coming into driveway is when I am neutral. As I turn corner I just throw in neutral and roll into driveway. This is when the rattle occurs.

Same issue exists on the 2nd Gen. Particularly annoying if going over a bump with clutch pedal to the floor, like a speed bump or when braking off road. My dealer changed my transmission at around 10000k, then said afterwards that they never should have done that as the rattle was normal. My biggest pet peeve of the truck, but still love it regardless. Just try to avoid rolling in neutral and/or using the clutch over abrupt bumps, right? :p

Totally fine if it's just the norm. Just want to make sure that it is and if any other third gen people have this noise. It's almost like a hollow rattle like something loose rattling in a can does not seem normal to me. However if it is and is known to be normal I can live with it. I have never purchased a brand new vehicle. I love this truck and if it needs looked at no worries.

I have a similar noise that I can only explain by saying it sounds like pots and pans being banged together when I'm shifting out of 1st and 2nd at low speeds haha . I assume it's normal but it is quite loud , it's really apparent when I'm in first at higher Rpms and then press the clutch. Anybody else have tiny Tacoma trolls banging pans underneath ur truck?

Edit- just read through some previous pages and saw that this clunking seems to be a normal thing on the third gens

Thanks. I'll go with normal. If it gets worse in the next 5 years I'll take it in for warranty. Time to enjoy!

    Yep. Mine does the same.
This isn't the only manual I've owned that does that, but the sound seems more apparent on this truck because it sounds like empty pots and pans just how @0331 described it. With my other trucks, the sound was more solid and seemed to not carry as far, if that makes sense.

Has anyone here attempted to do the Detent Ball replacement TSB? T-SB-0088-16 for when the gear gets stuck after driving for a while. Mine is on the list of possible ones that may have the issue, but I haven't had any long enough trips to see yet if it's going to be an issue. It's a cheap part and figured if it's easy enough I'll just go ahead and swap it myself.

Why not just have the dealer do it under warranty? If you haven't had the problem but are worried about it wait a bit and get it done before warrant expires, other wise don't worry to much about it.

A lot of dealers won't swap it though unless they can replicate it getting stuck. I was reading one person up here letting the tech drive his truck home for the night, since he lived 45 minutes away, just to be told the next day it couldn't be replicated.

The part is about $10. That's cheap enough to not deal with the dealer honestly. It looks pretty easy looking at the TSB for it and to go ahead and swap it now instead of going on our next trip to the mountains to find it it's stuck in gear when I come up to a mountain pass.

    none yet/none planned! It's perfect!
Just a couple observations with the manual:

I seem to have a problem pulling the stick from 5th gear to 6th gear. Have to push instead of pull!

I can't seem to find that elusive 7th gear. On the highway I occasionally go thru the gears and get to 6th and just want to keep shifting!

Being used to a 5 speed I am constantly putting it in 6th gear instead of reverse!

Have noticed the quicker you get out of the first 3 gears your MPG really does pretty good! Those first 3 are killers.

    Real men use three pedals!

Thanks Diablo169 for the info on this shift knob! Just installed and tried it out. Has a nice feel and goes well with my orange console bezel too.

After having the truck a week I really wish my daily commute was farther. Love driving the truck. I am getting used to the shifting and things are becoming smoother to me in shifting this new trsuck. I would like to know if you all could give me your idea of your best shift points in the 3rd gen. What rpm do you guys like to hang around in. The one thing I am trying to get used to however is the lag after pushing the gas pedal. This will def take some getting used to. Almost feels like I have a gas issue even though I know I don't.

recommend installing the OV tune, and then ask this question.
