I used Amsoil 75w-90. It made a huge difference over stock as far as positive shift engagement goes. The transmission as a whole is relatively clunky but it helped as far as the notchy-ness going from 1-2 and 2-3 for me. I'm not sure what the difference would be if you're running Redline already. I was considering buying a heavier shift knob to help make shifts smoother but the fluid change alleviated the need for that. For what it's worth I sent the fluid in for blackstone analysis and they noted that the viscosity on the stock fluid was less than claimed.

Write up I did here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-manual-transmission-6mt-fluid-change.481719/

I picked Amsoil over redline for a few reasons but I don't wanna get super deep into an oil discussion here. Based on my research, both seem to perform similiarly but the redline has a reputation for having a shorter life than Amsoil. For me, the cost delta is not an issue but it might not be objectively justifiable either.

Thanks for the info. I actually got the idea of Amsoil from you're thread. Nice write up you did. Going to be doing my diffs too after seeing yours. I was going to get some Amsoil but hadn't really heard too much feedback from people, even outside of TW, but had heard redline plenty of times. Mine does what you mentioned, notchy from 1-2 and 2-3. Every other gear seems pretty easy going in. After your blackstone results, I guess the OEM fluid just seems to be usable, but could use something a little better. I suppose I'll find out Friday when the oil and washers come in.

i also cannot comment on the Amsoil trans fluid from experience yet (changing my trans & diff tomorrow hopefully), but i can say that Amsoil's rep is second to none. i used it exclusively in my last car - motor, trans, and Haldex all 3 - it's the first choice of the Germans mostly so you know it's tried and true. I'll probably go Amsoil tomorrow because my tech uses it whenever he can since he's a German car technician (he's doing me a favor with the Tacoma).

Glad it was helpful! I used to be the guy who thought the Toyota service intervals were scripture - this experience changed my mind. I think redline is popular because it's good quality, affordable and VERY accessible (Amazon). Amsoil tends to be bought through a parts shop or some licensed dealer. I'm sure the redline will work great, just consider changing it out sooner than the regular service interval.

Nice! You'll love the difference. Mine felt like a new truck immediately after.

Ya. I know the brake thing. However there is a button in this truck meant for the exact scenario that I described above and find it to be a pretty cool feature and want to make sure it works...so anyone with knowledge on this issue? Do I have to be in 4 lo?

I put it in gear and turn over the engine and it just jumps along without starting so I stop cranking. On my 89 Toyota it start cranks and starts right away and starts pulling. Wondering if I am doing something wrong? Do I need to be in 4 low for this. Prob less strain I would think.

Hmmm. Don't think it needs to be in 4 low. Mine will start whether it's in 2, 4 high, or 4 low. It'll usually travel 1.5 to 2 truck lengths before it fires up.

Yah. Maybe that's it. Probably not cranking long enough. Just didn't want to mess anything up on my new truck. Will try tonight. Thnx!

I have RL MT-90 in my transmission. Definitely made a difference shifting 1>2 and 2>3. Especially in the colder weather.

Not sure if this one has been answered or discussed before (tried searching this thread), has anyone else experienced a lot of play in the shifter, especially when going over bumps? My shifter seems to have a lot of play in it, and wiggles quite a bit on bumpy roads (not sure how much play is defined as normal for these trucks). Truck is still basically brand new.

Yes the shifter in the 3rd Gen bounces around quite a bit compared to previous Gens, I think the engine and transmission have softer mounts.

I've never used it like that but to start the truck without getting in plenty of times.

Last time I tried my clutch start cancel, the truck inched forward while turning the key, but never completely turned over.

Thanks for the vids. Sounds like 4 low is the way to go as far as first vid explains. Most likely if I need to use it that's what I would be in anyway. Thanks again for the videos!

Ok. So got home and played around and works great in 2 hi as well. Just cranked and applied a little gas and she started right up as it was pulling up hill. Pretty happy with the execution. Thanks for the help everyone.
