Very common. I'll usually shift to second, and then it'll go into first. If not, I'll put it in second, start rolling forward, and then slip it into first. Sucks when you're the first person at a light and this happens.

This has happened to me on all three of my manual Toyota trucks. Either shifting into second and then up to first, or let off the clutch pedal and back in usually fix it quickly. Just one of those Toyota things I guess...

What RPM do you release the clutch at? Tried it today and still bucked on me majorly. Shifted at 4k down to 2.5kish.

I try to do the 1st to 2nd shift fast enough to lose only about 1000 RPMs. A decent run thru would be shift at 4.5K, drop down to about 3.5k and that seems to be in a fairly narrow sweet spot as anything below 3k is just dead.

I've found if you hold the RPMs for a second (I.e. Accelerate to 2.8k RPMs, then hover for a second) right before you shift, it helps smooth it out a lot.

i do this... that's where all my control comes from. but i never know how to describe it. like, bring your clutch to the bite point, hold it right there and ease it in gradually. right at the bite point is where it seems linearity is lost.

Mine does it also from first to second. I also had a squeaky clutch pedal around 5000 miles. A lil PB Blaster took care of that

Mine will do this sometimes when I park it. When I get back in it won't go into reverse, I'll generally have put it in first and roll forward and then it'll go into reverse just fine.

shifting as low as 4K in this truck for first gear is gonna put you around 1800-2000 and kill all your acceleration. If you wanna get anywhere you gotta shift higher. The motor can take being revved out without a problem, but it hates being lugged around. I usually shift into second around 5500 and that takes it down to 2800ish. If you wind it all the way to 6200 in first you can get it in second right when it hits the powerband again at around 3500-3700, thats gonna be your quickest shift if thats what you want.

    Edit:
Dont forget that this same motor is run in lexus vehicles with a 7200 rpm redline from the factory, and the fact that Toyota tested this motor to over 8500 revs. Im sure Toyota limited it to 6200 because thats the point where you could redline it all day without ever overwhelming the cooling system or some shit like that.

keep driving around with a big smug grin on my face knowing that if I keep my truck its got one of the more badass driving experiences out there for a vehicle, which is awesome. If I sell it, still awesome because its the last of the manual Toyotas now, so it will sell for plenty too. Either way great purchasing decision for all of us if you ask me :D

Good lord. I shift around 2.8-3k coming out of first gear, and everything is smooth and kosher.

Oh yeah I thought OP was asking about how to be QUICK, if he wanted smoothness then that can be had at any rpm, its all in balancing the clutch and throttle for that!
