Technically, you should always be in A gear when in motion. You shouldn't coast unless you're almost at a stop. But in your situation, I would have double clutched into first gear.

Serious question: Can you explain why you should always be in a gear when moving?

Coasting isn't safe. No ability to accelerate quickly if needed. Also less control over the vehicle because engine/drivetrain are disconnected from the road.

Well... it's because you're in more direct control of your vehicle. For example:

You're coasting to a stop and a car starts pulling out towards you as you're passing by and could hit you. Because you're in neutral, you can't step on the accelerator to pull away. However, if you were in gear, you could step on the pedal and accelerate and maneuver to the side.

Makes sense. I was thinking there was something to do with wear on the vehicle that I wasn't aware of.
    Thanks.

as a student of driving i agree, although the effect on the truck is pretty minimal, maybe hence the "technically..." comment. in a car with a higher power to weight ratio, bumping the gas when off throttle while the drivetrain is engaged (not costing) will cause torque to push the drivetrain down into the road increasing traction and control. in race cars you live and die by that control. on the road you just may need that unexpectedly one day.

No posi needed... Just tap your traction control switch and put it in auto LSD and your good. One feature these trucks have that really works well use it off road in 2wd pretty regularly.

nope, the auto lsd is a low speed traction solution you can't get any use of with normal on road 2hi tarmac driving.

if i ever put high power on this truck then I'll be planning to use it, which means i need a high speed usable traction solution. and I'll have to give up the low speed auto lsd to get it. i would not get real power here and be stuck with power on a one legger and a single E rate tire. not for me.

the only thing now is that there isn't a posi for the 8.7 rear yet. probably another 1-2 years for that if Eaton does their thing.

I'm late to the party as usual, but to me it depends on the situation. If I was in a 25mph residential area or somewhere I was taking my time, I'd just lug it in 2nd for a bit. Otherwise, rev it and hit 1st.

    Hello all!

I'm brand new to Tacoma world. Maybe you guys could offer me some good insight. I plan on buying a 2018 TRD Off-Road when I return home from my deployment in early 2018. I have done a lot of research and know exactly what options/package I want, except I keep debating whether to get the manual or auto. I've owned two manual cherokees with the bullet proof tacoma AX15 5-speed and absolutely loved them. I prefer driving a manual but the thing that is causing me to debate possibly getting the auto is that the manual is not available in the double cab w/long bed, only the double cab w/short bed. I really like the utility of the long bed and crawl control is kind of cool. What would you guys suggest? Is the 5 foot bed sufficient or would an extra foot make a big difference and is it worth the trade off of losing the manual transmission?

I know what advice you're going to get in here.

You can get a long bed in the Access Cab Sport 6MT config.

You won't know exactly what you'll want until you try out both the auto and manual. As for wanting a DCLB OR in manual, that configuration is currently unavailable with a MT. You'll have to buy the auto and custom install a MT yourself, or get the DCSB. Another option is the TRD Sport Access cab which is available with a MT and can be modified with OR suspension parts which can be found cheap here on TW.

Do you plan on doing a lot of gear hauling. You may also purchase a bed extender which will afford you a little extra space in a short bed model.
