Was reading a little on a thread about stumble misfire issues with manuals. I had some dead spots when I would accelerate quickly in 2nd but as I have added miles seems to have mostly gone away. Does are a lot of you with manuals experiencing this problem a lot or does it just seem like a few.

Haven't experienced anything like a misfire myself.

I've felt something, but I assumed it was the stepped cam timing changes and injection transitions. There are noticeable low RPM flat spots and then bumps later in the RPM band. Its laughable that it ever got out of the ECU tuning lab at Toyota with this power delivery.

Those with mis-fires.....are you somehow monitoring or datalogging these?

Its kind of a weird stumble, not sure if misfire would be the correct term.

Totally random, but do you guys fire up your truck and let it warm up for a minute or two? Or do you guys just fire and go?

In the mornings I crank up and go back into my house for 2-3 mins to comb my hair and grab my remaining things before going to work. I generally wait for the idle to drop to its lowest RPM which is 600-700 before before driving off slowly to finish warm up.

I remember once I floored it in 3rd going maybe 25mph and the truck accelerated slowly then jerked and took off suddenly.

For me, above 50° outside, I fire and go. Usually in winter I let it the engine get to 120° (where the needles touches the bottom line). Tranny tends to shift smoother with a warmer engine.

Feels almost like the A/C compressor is kicking on/off?
Been assuming that is just the way the Atkinson cycle feels but not sure now. Was looking over the throttle position sensor threads for leads also.

You don't need to wait for the engine to warm up, just don't mash on it from a completely cold start.

The oil actually gets up to temp faster if you use the engine instead of letting it idle for several minutes.

Idling and waiting for it to warm up is inefficient, both time and gas wise. :burnrubber:

Pretty much same here, fire and go. Winter I let it run while I am scraping the windows and clearing snow off of it.

I live in Phoenix, don’t really have that problem. I drive about 6 minutes before I hit the freeway and crank around 75mph for the next 14. By the time I even get to the freeway the temps are halfway between hot and cold.

I have the stumble at around 2000 RPM under load. I have not verified by logging, but I have no doubt that it is misfires. It's just not enough of them to trigger a cell.

I think it's in the OV Tune Thread where the guy put up what looked like a fuel map for our Tacoma and compared it to something else like a Mazda or something. The other vehicle was a very smooth map while the Tacoma was jagged with peaks and valleys all over the place which would obviously explain the dead spot or stumbles.

Have always driven manual transmission Tacomas. A 1990, 1998, currently have a 2009. Ordered a cement 2017 TRD Pro with MT in February of this year and was told by my dealer the other day that I won't get it due to allocations and no more orders being taken for the 2017 model year. I'll see what's available for 2018. I wish Toyota would increase the number of Tacomas manufactured with the manual transmission option.

You can order the 2018 but won't get a cement model. You can order the regular OR model and ask for it to be in Cement with the 6MT.

I had this happen to me when I was shopping for mine, luckily I had deposits with 2 different dealers and one came through. There might be some Cement MTs still unsold in lots around the country, should check it out.
