For those you of with MT 3rd gens, you guys feel or hear any clunks/grinds from gearbox your first 1000 miles, before first oil change? I'm thinking it just may be me getting used to a new clutch.

it's clunky. 3rd is often the issue when learning this trans and many speak of grinding. but you'll get it. it is indeed quirky.

I'm 59 years old and I wouldn't own anything but a manual trans truck ! The only time I wish I didn't is when I'm stuck in bumper to bumper traffic !

My clutch pressure plate was overtorqued from the factory and had it replaced in the first 600 miles. Was getting a spinning bearing noise when pressing clutch pedal and occasional notchy shifts. I would also grind my 1st gear synchro because the clutch was dragging a little. Truck has 7100 miles now and shifts buttery smooth all the time.

My 3rd Gen is butter smooth, and makes if feel really weird driving my 1st Gen again.
Took both trucks out to our local off road area this past week and gave my 16 yr old son his first self piloted trip up and down some hills that made the axles flex good. Then up and over some big gravel piles with 30+ degree slopes.

The 3rd Gen OR is super smooth on the gravel roads, hill climbs and such, over the 1st Gen even with slightly smaller tires and 1" larger rims than the 1st Gen.

I've noticed that when the transmission is cold I get a slight grind into 3rd, but that usually disappears after it warms up.

When I was looking for my truck in CA, I have to drive 4hrs just to pick up my truck.
I saw a lot of MT without Tech package.
I saw few Pros but not my price range...

I’ve only seen two other OR’s in M/T without tech pkg. Nearly all other OR’s I see are 4x2 which never made sense to me. Once you get to the OR trim it should be 4x4 only.

It took me almost 4 months to get mine and it was about 100 miles away.

Placebo effect question for my fellow MT drivers.

I'm in the midst of running a tank of 93 for laughs. It's winter fuel, so it's not quite as good as the summer stuff, but my placebo effect is telling me the truck is running better, less noise at lower RPM and a bit smoother on the partial throttle mid-RPM range. The "feels like a turbo car" power delivery has been lessened a bit and it feels smoother.

Legit, or all in my head? Is it worth the extra $4 per fill-up? My 2G 5AT ran better withe premium and pinged less, and I'm inclined to feel the same about the 3G.

    Agree / disagree?

    Mostly stuff I built.
I have been running 93 in mine over a year now. Runs smoother, the high pressure fuel pump doesn’t chirp as much and gets better fuel mileage. The 93 really shines when towing on my truck. I tow my welding trailer 4-5 Days a week typically and on 87 I average about 11.5-12mpg with it tagging along behind. On 93 I average 13-14 mpg hauling it around. Trailer weight is a constant close to 2600lbs. The fluctuations are terrain and material weight. Not sure we ever see winter grade fuel here in Texas. My mpg stays pretty consistent year round, 17.5-19 mpg empty and 13-14 towing. So I agree with you.

I’ll bite. As an experiment I’ve run nothing but 93 (standard 10% ethanol blend we get here) since November (approximately 1700 miles for me). There is an obvious difference in how the truck runs, but general performance is the same. I’ve definitely noticed smoother power delivery as a result. That said, I can’t say for sure that there’s more performance or power. Just that the truck feels smoother.

The difference is totally legit. Is it worth the cost? Probably not. But worth is subjective. My MPGs have seen a very slight improvement but we’re on winter blend here too.

The reason I decided to try it was a thread over on t4r.org where a guy who’s essentially testing a magnuson supercharger (he’s got an early release unit; everyone who got one was tasked with helping work out kinks and develop directions and whatnot) on his 5th gen 4Runner posted a thread on what he’s noticed the engine doing based on running different octanes. Obviously the 4.0 dual VVTi is different from our 3.5 d4s engine but the general ideas should be the same. It’s an interesting discussion: OA

You need to have someone else with you while you fill up. Let them make the decision and not tell you what they put in. Do it a few times to see if you can honestly tell. Ive done blind taste tests in the past for people who swear they can tell the difference between coke and pepsi. Done it many times and no one has ever been able to tell.

Crap! I agree. I accidentally put 92 in after running 87 for almost 3,000mi.

I posted this in the OVtune MT thread (I'm on the stock tune but was following the tune developments):

"I thought about putting this in another thread, but it seems to fit here? My apologies if folks feel otherwise.

Wednesday afternoon, I accidentally put 92 octane in. I hit the wrong button and didn't realize it until it was flowing. It was a total of 18.9gal, so it is about 91.5 octane mixed.

I didn't notice much difference driving it normally except for what seems to be a slight bump in MPGs. We'll see if that pans out for real. What I did notice is that when getting into the accelerator deeply the torque feels linear without even a surge at 4k.

It is puzzling. It could also be the ECU learning / adapting? I feel that I don't seem to have some of the problems mentioned here, even on 87. I would even say that the blips are slightly too aggressive on the stock tune of my truck and there doesn't seem to be any delay compared with other electronic throttles that I have driven.

I may try for a couple more tanks to see if it sticks? With only a 1mpg difference, the cost is covered. It does seem to eliminate about half the reason I wanted the tune though. The other half is DFCO / engine braking which doesn't seem to be addressed at this time.

I just thought this seemed odd and might even be placebo? If folks are curious, I would be happy to post updates?"
