I was actually thinking the same thing, will probably trade the 17 for the final year if I know for sure that manual will be history

Trade? There is no trade lol...hence keep the final MT in styrofoam peanuts til the 16 dies. Gotta stretch it out...till we hit Mad Max proportions of fuel rationing...THEN, when there is no more gasoline anymore, convert it to a wood burning Toyota a la Eustace on Mountain Men (so sad to see its demise last week) and mall crawl!

Yeah, for me driving a manual is more important than getting a specific type of truck so if I can't get a Tacoma in it I just won't be buying one. Maybe the Ram 2500 will still have one by then. Assuming all "manually driven" cars haven't been phased out.

I think we’ll be lucky to have a car with steering in 2026.

I tried searching this thread but couldn’t really find what I was looking for. How do y’all rate this trans compared to other manuals?

I’ve never owned a manual vehicle so when I drove the Tacoma with a MT I was probably too focused on learning its clutch and shifts to enjoy it. But compared to the mustang I drove it didn’t seem as precise. The stang seemed to have more spacing between the gears side to side with obviously shorter throws. But the Tacoma felt more rubbery to me. I guess the only way for me to know is to go to a dealer and do an extended test drive. I’ll

Basically, for those who aren’t the type that say “I’ll never own an auto”, do you find this setup considerably more enjoyable over a 3rd gen with the auto? Is it actually fun to drive?

This is by far the smoothest, easiest shifting Tacoma, the only gear that used to be difficult to engage on mine was Reverse, but that finally went away around 7500 miles.

I've definitely felt the same as you - to me it feels like it belongs in a much bigger truck than the Tacoma is. Every shift is really slow and purposeful, kind of like the old manual school buses I drove a few times. My Jeep TJ feels better shifting to me. I think it might have to do, at least somewhat, with the clutch accumulator. Obviously it doesn't affect the feel of moving the shifter but the clutch feel itself is probably a big part of it.

THAT SAID, it's only one of two light trucks available with a stick nowadays (the other being the much bigger Ram 2500), and I'd take a shitty gear row over a good automatic any day. Especially in the Tacoma, which from what's been reported is far from a good automatic.

You can also get a Manual in the Nissan Frontier 4x2 and 4x4, and the Colorado in 4x2 only.

Ah shoot right, forgot about the Nissan (and I had even looked at that before getting the Tacoma!)

I kind of put the Colorado out of my mind since I needed 4x4 so that chance was over before it started. Thanks for the corrections!

    Awesome.
I just taught my 16 yo daughter to drive my Taco. She inherited my old Honda Element with AT, but she really liked the MT and was really good at it right away. I guess the taco is pretty forgiving, but she didn't slip the clutch once. Only one ugly stall. Popped it a couple times, but no major wear. I don't know if I've had a prouder moment...

I'm at 3k and I'm always throwing it in reverse instead of first from a stop. All the manual I've had the reverse was always right them back. This is my first 6 speed and sometimes I pull it to far left and put it in reverse.

I've done that once or twice. For me at least it seems like it'll only push past the gate into reverse if you really give it a good push, so I've developed the habit to just softly shift it into first.
