+1. I wish it could have been that way.

I tried to find a 1st or 2nd Gen before buying the 2017. It is great that they hold their value, but it was more than I could pull the trigger on.

Yeah its crazy. Been trying to get a few friends into them and their tone completely changes when they see the prices

I know the first gens can, but can the 2nd gens get manual hubs?

At least, it's great to know these things will run forever. I don't plan on parting with mine now that I finally have one.

No. For the 2nd and 3rd Gens, the actuator is in the front diff not the hubs.

Gotcha, that makes a lot more sense as you quoted a 4 cylinder post on the previous one.

    Nice!

Did you trade in the 2nd Gen? Probably hard to leave it behind?

Right? My 90 has 262k, 96 has 315k and the camry has 257k. They never die.

That's what I thought but wasn't sure since you mentioned lookig at 2nd gens. I don't know about 1st gens but I know with some last gen pickups and 2nd gen 4runners the actuator is in the diffs but the hubs were the same so you could still install manual hubs if you desired

I did, me and this truck went thru a lot of deep mud (literally) & the stories I have... But after moving from 05 to a 15 I got tired of the same interior comforts.
Time to take this little truck on the trails as soon as I get a chance. :burnrubber:

We got to meet sometime later this month, compare things and teach me to shift better since you know this truck already well enough.

Yes, the first and reverse gearing are about the only things I can't stand about my truck. I really don't know what they were thinking with those gear ratios. Was trying to back up a tandem-axle enclosed U-haul trailer and I burnt my clutch for the first time ever. I could barely make it work.

I did the same thing backing up my boat last Fall. If I don’t get more efficient backing up my boat and trailer, I’ll burn out the clutch by this Summer’s end. I’ve never destroyed a clutch by burning it out. How much can a clutch take before it needs to be replaced? Anyone burn out a clutch beyond repair?

I think in really, really old cars that didn' make enough power to climb steep hills the driver would back up the hill because Reverse was the steepest gear.

If you smoke your clutch you also smoke your pressure plate and flywheel. Standard procedure is to replace the clutch plate, pressure plate and throw out bearing and have the flywheel turned. Usually failure to do any of the above results in "clutch chatter" and a redo. PS... if you smoke a clutch you were doing something you should not have been doing. If you need to fry your clutch to back a trailer, don't back the trailer.

Haven't heard that but I could see it being true. You might be thinking of the Model T which used gravity fed fuel, but the tank was behind the engine so going forward up a steep hill no fuel would drip into the engine.

Drivers backed Model Ts up hills because the gas tank was behind the engine and gravity feed. So it could go up a steeper hill in reverse than forward because it didn't get gas going forward.

And while you are in there, may as well replace the transmission input shaft pilot bearing there in the crankshaft.
