I was looking for a heavier shifter for mine. The problem is that leather cover has a weird snap ring that attaches to the shift nob. You will almost have to have a Toyota replacement knob because of this. Anyone have any ideas?

Aftermarket shift boot without the weird snap ring? Knob thread is the same 12x1.25 that Toyota always uses.

Maybe. I'll have to look to see how that ring attaches to the shift boot.

It seems the newer autos and/or the ones with more gears (6-8) aren't holding in gear downhill as well as some of the previous basic models that were fitted in pickups and jeeps. Local brake shops are buried with work (its steep here, 3 of our 4 main roads have 10.000' passes). I know a few contractors who are putting new engines in their old Chevs and Fords rather than deal with the silliness. They guys who mostly work in town are buying up their nearly new rigs. Many of the new rigs have vented discs, so they're not warping like they used to, but pad wear is rapid with the heating. I just came down from 10,640' in driving snow and plenty of tourists riding their brakes the whole way from one of the ski areas, lucky they have ABS or the road would have been more littered with spin-outs than it was. Skiing, however, was awesome. 20" of fresh on Coal Bank Pass

So what are typical speeds and gears you guys downshift at? All we have is flat roads in phoenix so I've never learned how to downshift.

It's definitely something I want to pearn so I can save my brakes when I'm coming down a mountain.

I don't have any speeds memorized yet. However this is my first 6 speed (all 4 snd 5 speeds before) and I find that the gears are so close together that I often end up skipping gears while downshifting.

For example when I am slowing down from 6th I'll hit fourth and then second. From fifth I'll go directly to third then to second.

    Anyone else do this?

2015 2.7 5spd. i just love it, all my trucks have had a manual. my first new truck was a 78 int scout. 4spd. 4cyl, locking hubs. wish they still offered that in a taco. that truck could go any where,20 mpg.

Locking hubs....I dream of them in the newer tacomas. My 96 Tacoma had them. Loved them.

Any one have pictures of the transmission itself yet curious if the RC62 has the integral bell housing like the RA60 did..

This 6 speed has taken me a lot of getting used to, both for upshifting and downshifting. Definitely the gears are so close together that if I shift from 6 to 5 or 4 to 3 I feel like I get little or nothing out of it.

I agree completely. That's why I skip gears on the downshift.

I can snap a picture from under the truck. What angle do you need?

Yeah, I always laugh when people say the Tacoma has a long throw. I drove an '89 F-150 for years with a 5 speed. If someone was sitting in the center of the bench seat and slouched down, they'd get their nuts crushed when I hit 4th gear. The Tacoma shifter feels downright sporty compared to most trucks I've driven. I love it so far and have zero regrets about going back to a manual.

    Stock... For now...
I just bought a 2016 manual Tacoma. First manual transmission vehicle I have owned, had an auto corolla that I had since I was 16. I was too young and dumb to appreciate driving with three pedals. I have only had the manual for 300 miles now, and have started to get the feel for shifting smoothly, and stalling less. But I could not imagine going back to an auto. Driving was sooooo boring! I also drive a lot better with a manual transmission, trading excessive speed for smooth shifting...

Anyway. Have any of you manual people towed with your trucks yet? If so how does it tow? I saw Fast Lane Truck did a tow test with an auto 3rd gen Tacoma and it ran around 4500 rpm's constantly while traveling at highway speeds (probably running in 4th gear). Wondering if the gearing in the manual allows to run lower rpm's at highway speeds while towing (ability to use a higher gear and still have the torque to keep rolling).

Anyone know if the URD Short Shifter for the 2.7L 2nd Gen still work for the 3rd Gen 2.7L?

Love my 2015 SBDC Off-Road 6M. My last was the only auto I have ever owned. It had some benefits, but overall, I like the control of a manual. The only thing I don't like about this one is the reverse gear. I have a moderately long and VERY steep driveway lined with retaining wall and often have to back a trailer up it. To be able to pull that off, I have to throw it in 4 low. Why didn't they match the first and reverse?

I'm surprised the V6 MT reverse is not as low as the 4Cyl MT reverse.... That may take some getting used to. I did not try out reverse on my test drive aside from putting it in R to check out the camera.
