I have only had to reverse up hill with a trailer, 1 on dry pavement and 2 light cargo trailer or my boat for a short distance in my driveway (the lighter one). I did find that I had to "ride" the clutch more than I should, but did not burn the clutch. I imagine a heavy(er) trailer, steeper incline, or longer distance would all compound this.

Yeah, I had to ride the clutch as well. Did burn it up a little too when I was trying to position the trailer super close to there garage. It might have been 4500 pounds I was pushing.

    Yep.

I will say though, that while I don't mind 1st being as low as it is in the 3rd gen 6M/T, 2nd could be a bit closer ratio. The gap 1-2 is kinda wide for this engine at low rpm. Like others have said, you have to rev it up a bit more than you'd expect.

Reverse though.. yeah I don't know what the engineers were smokin when they did that. Some kind of trade-off mechanically or for space inside the gearbox is the only way that it remotely make any sense.

I pulled a few boats that were actually 5K and the truck did it well. I wouldn't tow that weight interstate, but I'd have no problems doing it around town. I had no problem launching it, BUT retrieving was a different story. I tried doing it in 2wd to see how she'd manage. Long story short she made it up 10 feet and started lugging. I paused put it in 4 lo and off she went.

I think she can handle the weight with no brakes as long as you truly pay attention and give yourself idiot proof stopping power. (For some reason people seem to cut you off when you are towing)

I finally got my new shifter knob! The grommet fix for holding the boot down works out surprisingly well.

I started out on manuals (96 Jetta and 00 Outback) and have been itching for a truck with MT. I'd love a 3rd gen TRD OR AC MT... what gives? :annoyed: Does anyone have insight why they don't offer those in the US anymore?

Toyota doesn't offer them anymore? I'm sure they still do. I remember when I was getting my truck one dealer told me they don't buy them because no one wants a manual anymore so if you want a manual head to a dealership around the mountains since they are way more popular there. I went to the next dealer and they had one sitting right on the lot. I would just shop around for one but don't give in and get an automatic if you really want a manual. You will be upset later down the road.

I can't seem to find any of the 3rd gens in the Off-Road Access Cab style with an M/T (I want that bright blue!). Several other posts suggest they're sold in the beautiful land of Canada. Agreed on the auto, I'd rather pay a little more and go full-size in that case.

Oh.. Yeah, I'm not sure about that. I seriously don't understand why Toyota limits certain options with the manual. I wanted a DCLB but they do not offer that with a manual. Why not, Toyota? The manual was more important to me than the LB so I went with the DCSB. I'm stoked on it, though. That would suck if you needed to buy a truck in Canada if the States don't sell them with the options you want.

Same here. I told the sales manager if he could get me a DCLB with MT, I’d buy it even if it was hot pink. He said I wasn’t the first one to tell him something similar.
