Regarding 4th to 5th gear shift-

Do y’all move the shifter “up - right - up” or just push the shifter diagonally directly from 4th to 5th if that makes sense? My shift is smoother with the latter but I’m not sure if I’m going to wear something out over time gliding the shifter through the guides like that.

The shift forks will not like that long term.

I probably skip 5th gear 90% of the time, 4th to 6th works pretty well. If I do decide on using 5th then I skip 4th gear by going 3rd to 5th.

Just an update, I got back from the dealer for the blower motor recall fix and asked them to check the TSB on updating the ECU for the manual trans. The service guy said there’s none for the manual only for the auto. I wasn’t going to argue, whichever the case my truck drives and shifts fine the way it is.

If you are happy, then it's all good, but there is a TSB for the MTs (just not the 2018s yet). The TSB is attached to this post:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/software-update-for-the-manual.562550/page-99#post-18788693

    It's applicable to your 2017.

    No problem!

Note the warranty coverage on that TSB (Page 1) falls under the 96mo / 80k emissions warranty, so you should have a lot of time left on that.

Ok think something is going wrong. Recently after shifting the truck acts like im not applying any throttle. Let off the throttle and than fine. Scan tool reads everything ok even during that delay. So i dont think its a sensor.

Anyone think the 2.7 5MT comes back? Maybe with a 6MT instead?

I just got my ecu updated at the dealership using the idle surge TSB.

Honestly, this car is not drivable without the ECU update.

This is something that all third gen MT owners need to do immediately.

It's just a normal vehicle now.

I complelty agree, city driving is a different experience now. I also drove it on trails and it’s a big improvement. Prior to an update I would have to shift to a 1st gear on a more serious climbs, now I can stay in 2nd gear and it just crawls.

Yea I’ve noticed that the 4-5 gear change feels weird. It’s like there is hardly a difference between the ratios. So I usually skip 5th too. I’ll also have to try the 3-5 change

What TSB number is that? I’m taking my truck in for a routine 5000 mile service on Tuesday. I might as well bring it up since it the throttle does have a weird feel to it when changing gear. Thanks!

The TSB is for 16-17 only. They may not do it for you.

Check the software update for manual thread for the TSB number.

Ok thanks. Maybe I’m just still getting used to the throttle...

I have a 2018 and got the flash done. Showed them these pics from my post. Use them and be adamant that you want the flash.

Show the pics. I had to tell them 3x. It worked though. Tell them to look at the ECU numbers. The title of the tsb is wrong.
