I will usually stay in second until about 9mph if on flat roads. If going uphill or for extended periods at 9mph I will stop and go back into 1st. I can usally rev match without needing to increase rpms. Just leave in neutral and clutch into 1st when the speedo hits 3-4mph. Will go in rather smooth.

I have thought about this too. But I would keep it in 5th and 6th if hauling within the Payload capacity range and the object is not so large that it is causing massive aerodynamic drag. The owners manual recommend 5th or S5 for Autos to for improved battery charging and engine braking. This also keeps your RPMs higher for better power and cooling. If in overdrive pulling a heavy load, your engine will bog which is working harder and can overheat more easily as it is doing more work at lower engine speed with your water pump spinning slower too.

I find for any heavy towing the engine doesn't have enough juice in top gear to maintain speed reliably so I keep it one gear lower.

I've towed 5500lbs with the 2nd gen and a 6x12 UHaul packed to the ceiling. Kept it in 5th and 65 mph most of the time. Was in 2nd or 3rd gear at 4000-4500 RPM to maintain 45 mph while climbing Monarch pass in Colorado. On the downhill I left it in 2nd and crawled down at 35-40mph with the engine and barely touching the brakes. 14.5 mpg over 200 miles, not bad for keeping it in 5th most of the way.

Anyone know the ratio of the 2nd gen 5th gear vs the 3rd gen 5th gear and 6th gear off hand? Or an entire chart?

    Here's the 3rd Gens:

I believe the 2nd Gens were geared lower in the GB and higher in the diffs? Not 100% sure though.

Found this on another TW post, can't find any official place but it looks right. Years ago I was looking at it and remembered 5th was direct drive in the 6spd manual for the 4.0 V6.
    1st 4.17
    2nd 2.19
    3rd 1.49
    4th 1.19
    5th 1.00
    6th 0.85

5th and 6th are what I remember seeing also. What is the FD ratio?

On mine I just read the door code and I think I have 4.56? A04A is the code.

Hi, I'm new here. I just bought my first pick-up and first manual transmission vehicle for myself. It's a 2001 Tacoma with 4WD. I have never owned a 4x4 before, how do I use this transfer case without messing anything up? I have the manual lever transfer case. Do I stop the truck and put it into neutral to shift into 4hi? Or can that be done on the fly under a certain speed? I've googled this question and have gotten no answers specific to my vehicle and I'd just like to know before I go screw it up real bad. Everyone I know has an automatic 4x4 with an electric switch for their 4x4 engagement. I want to try it out on an easy trail first, but I'm just curious if anyone could give me answers on this.

Had my 16 in for service today and test drove a 19 MT to pass the time. That clutch felt so light and easy to push compared to my 16! I don’t remember if mine was ever so light, but i wonder if its just gotten harder to push over 70k miles or if the new MTs are coming w/ some different clutch set-ups? If its the same clutch from 16 to 19 and mine has just gotten crusty, then i’d love to get my clutch back to that easy press; any ideas about how to do that?

Mine is pretty light. On the same order as the MT cars that we had in the past and maybe slightly lighter than the 2nd Gen MTs that I test drove. Both 3rd Gen MTs, including the one that I bought, had the engage point a bit further out than I expected but I grew used to it quickly.

I did take a lemon 2017 DCSB MT OR for a little drive. It had the pedal TSB done on it. I had no trouble driving it, but it felt like crap. The engagement zone was very small and the pedal was much heavier.

I know that doesn't help much, but there is more variation between otherwise similar Tacos than I would expect out of Toyota.

We have had four vehicles with hydraulic clutches, and similar to hydraulic brakes, the feel never changes with age or miles in my experience. That is one of the major benefits to hydraulics, in my mind. In the vehicles with cable clutches, I would have to cranking in or out a bit to account for summer and winter temps.

The abritor found in his favor and last that I heard was that a check was on its way through processing.
