That is my understanding too, why go thru the hassle to get the same parts.

i am looking for a solution. rebuilding an FJ metal unit is an option. going expensive is an option but not necessary unless i can't make a basic tight metal unit work.

My wife's PA was sharing with us his recent visit to Scotland. They drive on the left side and most of the autos were manual transmissions including rental cars. Avis even gave them wrist bands to wear on their left hands to help remind them. He stated it felt weird shifting the stick with his left hand but eventually got used to it.

Manuals are still king outside the US, apparently American drivers are lazy.

    https://www.autoslash.com/blog-and-tips/posts/manual-vs-automatic-transmission-in-rental-cars

"Outside North America, Manual Transmission is Still King

Outside the U.S. and Canada, you have to specify if you want a rental car with an automatic transmission—and, depending on the country and size of the city—it can sometimes be hard to find one.

When automatic transmissions are available, it is often far more expensive to rent one in the same car class as a vehicle with a manual transmission. In some smaller cities and off-the-beaten-path regions, it's simply impossible to find a rental car with a stick shift. Considering a visit to Ponta Delgada, Portugal? There are never automatic transmissions available."
