Yep and on the 2020s that also means we lose out on the remote start they added.

So, bottom line, I’m not missing out on anything added more recently in this regard? And if it gets into 4th gen then we will see? But maybe 4th gen no MT? Seems like at some point this truck is EOL based on trajectory. One big reason why I had to buy.

Basically the only difference between the 16-17 and 2020 are CarPlay and TSS and power seat. Otherwise it’s basically unchanged.

Articles have discussed a lightened and more efficient gearbox for the 4th Gen.

OK, I did some lame attempts at googling but came up with total bs, any hints on keywords to hunt down such articles? The bronco reveal certainly doesn't hurt but am I the only one who thinks gen 3 might be the last of the MT's given that Gen 2 was the last of the RC's?

I had the same suspicion, esp with the hybrid happening, until I read that. I don't have a link because the guy that referenced it was off his rocker about 4th Gen engines calling the 1GR trash, but hoping for an N/A 1UR o_O

I will check my history in the morning.

    Found it!

    https://www.autonews.com/article/20180305/OEM03/180309685/toyota-revs-engine-development

One problem though. I thought it was an article about the USDM, it is actually talking about global markets. Obviously!

I was hung up looking for specific engine discussion that is not in there when I read it the first time.

I assume that the manual will be gone in the 4th generation. It has already been eliminated from the 4 cyl models and all access cab models (at least in the US). I feel lucky that I bought a manual access cab before it was too late...

Only gone on the SR. The Sport ACLB still has one as Standard.

Of course, the OR and Pro still have the MT.

Maybe helpful or maybe not, but I actually filled out the paperwork and got formal rejection trying to order a 2020 ACLB OR MT prior to finding my truck. The fleet manager said it was worth a shot. That was early Covid and during the $2k incentive while factories shut down so not sure how much of a role that played.

The fleet manager said custom builds and even paint colors are region specific so it may be possible to get an OR ACLB MT somewhere else. Of course I’ve never seen one myself, only sports. He did know his trucks pretty well and he did suggest just going DCSB which is where I ended up.

DCLB in MT is probably the only thing which could tempt me to sell. Or an EV compact pickup below $35k which seems far less likely.

ACLB TRD OR MT is only available in Canada. You have to settle for TRD sport if you want ACLB MT in the US

Thank you for sharing this, I enjoyed reading it. Though it's now 2 years old and it's safe to say things have changed a bit since then, it's interesting to read about Toyota's commitment to ICE engines.

    Some notable quotes:
"Toyota plans to introduce 17 versions of nine new engines by 2021. There also will be 10 versions of four new transmissions and 10 versions of six hybrid systems."
"Toyota also plans a six-speed manual transmission that is lighter, more compact and more efficient than the outgoing gearbox."
"Toyota's engine plans also acknowledge the market's rapid shift toward light trucks, a U.S. sales trend the Japanese automaker has been slower to capture than rivals."

My high level takeaway of that article, though it's clearly a reputable source, I'm not convinced this is a big inside scoop on the MT front. I suspect thinking may evolve over time and that the time to drop a US MT option is exactly when phasing in new engines, particularly when the focus is on fuel economy. Seems highly likely MT remains an option internationally so I think that quote above is, as you indicate, more geared towards the global market as a whole rather than our domestic options.

But the bronco MT is definitely an unexpected move which shakes up the math, the first "new" production MT vehicle in quite some time?

The TGNA-F effort has evolved since that article because of the late start on the next Gen Tundra. That said, platform introductions are a 5yr process at a minimum. Mid-cycle refreshes are 2yrs, depending on the level of changes. So, most every major component was locked in well before that article date.

So, I'm thinking that I ought to post in the MT Ovtune thread but given that I have a 2016 and I don't know it's history prior to this year outside of a carfax which showed regular visits to the dealer for service, what would be the "best" way to evaluate if any of the reported tune/performance type concerns might be worth further analysis/investigation?
